[AMD] Family 17h (Models 00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller is disabled on LM20, but working on LM19.3

Post by MaxChen »

screenshot:
the Audio Controller is OFF
the Audio Controller is OFF
This computer is dual boot: LM 20 mate and LM19.3 Mate, the audio control is working in LM19.3

Is it possible that it is related to kernel? Say, as in https://forum.manjaro.org/t/137162 ?

Only one choice, "OFF", nothing else. If there were multiple choice, I should have try them out.

Hi MaxChen, and welcome to the forum.

Run this and paste the output:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line should have a URL pointing to your sound setup. That should give us a clue why this is happening.

Code: Select all

~$ curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed

So I Download the script (chmod +x), and run it:

Code: Select all

pa-info > sound.txt
sound.txt.tar.gz
txt file too large, so zip it

You're the second user I've seen with this:

Code: Select all

	Profiles:
input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Input (sinks: 0, sources: 1, priority: 65, available: no)
output:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Output (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 6500, available: no)
output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Duplex (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 6565, available: no)
off: Off (sinks: 0, sources: 0, priority: 0, available: yes)
	Active Profile: off
All profiles other than Off are not available.

See if this changes that:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
Also, delete the files in /home/YourUserName/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and see if that makes any change.

And lastly, boot to 19.3, verify sound is working, then shut down, don't reboot. Wait 2 minutes then power up into 20 and test the sound. Any difference?

I try 3 hours, in vain

nothing change after: sudo alsa force-reload
nothing change if: delete the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k

A tragedy: When I reboot back to lm19.3, see the screenshot
became disable!
became disable!
I was using LM 19.3, and enjoy a youtube video before mkusb for LM20 iso. But now, the sound card is disabled!

I try to install old kernel 5.3.0-61 on LM 19.3, try again, 5.3.0-59, sound in these 2 kernels were working before I install LM20.
In LM19.3, I try sudo alsa force-reload, and delete the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k, NO LUCK, totally lost!

Edit: I upgrade the BIOS, and no luck for the sound

I try live usb, it is disabled!

Is it possible that the hardware/chip failure, during the period of install LM20?

I doubt that. The newest version of pulseaudio might be to blame for this. Try this then reboot and test the sound:

Code: Select all

apt update && apt install libpulse-mainloop-glib0=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 libpulse0=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 libpulsedsp=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio-module-bluetooth=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 pulseaudio-utils=1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2

That command is only for the 20 version of Mint by the way. Also, it might help to shut down the computer between OS changes. Sometimes rebooting from one OS to the other can cause this.

Thanks very much!

for the version 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2: no luck! the Audio is stilled disabled (power off, unplug the cable, plug the cable after 5 mins, and power on the computer )

I also test kernel, using 5.7.8, the Audio control is still be disabled

no way out.

Okay, run this one again please. I want to see if anything has changed with the new kernel:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
I won't be back for about 14 hours, but I'll check your output as soon as I get here.

after sudo alsa force-reload and delete the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k, it is still be disabled.

What's worse, when boot to LM19.3 or live-usb, this sound card is always be disabled now.

Okay, I'm suspecting there might be an ownership issue as one possibility for your issues. Run this and if there's any output it hopefully has resolved some of the problems:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -Rv --from=root dengta: ~
Make sure to copy that exactly, and that you run it in a normal terminal window, not a root terminal window. Reboot after that, then paste the output of pacmd list-cards if the sound still isn't working.

This is on your LM 20 install I want you to run that.

First, have you checked your BIOS to make sure the built-in sound card is enabled? I've not seen one so stubborn as this, so it's worth checking. There may be no option there, I haven't a clue, but do check.

Next, try these commands to see if they enable the sound:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_09_00.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
Followed by this:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_09_00.3.analog-stereo
Then see if this produces sound:

Code: Select all

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

These 3 cmds work!, I can hear the sound "front centre"
when I go to the sound preference, I can test the speaker, left and right channels are working. However, when I click the profile drop-box, this audio control is reset to be disabled
