Wifi (Realtek RTL8723BE) doesn't work with 5.x kernel on 19.x and now 20

Post by lonely_llama »

Upgraded to 20 from 19.3 without a hitch - except that it again switched over to a 5.x kernel and that resulted in wifi not working anymore. As in, the tray icon will never detect any available networks. I'm back on the 4.15.0-109 kernel, but it says it is unsupported.

Should I stick with this kernel forever or is there a way to get it work with the 5.x kernel? I've been using Mint on this laptop since 19.2, and wifi has never worked with any kernel version 5.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci
If need be, establish temporary internet connection by other means.

This has nothing to do with the kernel - already have done this to get wifi running in the first place when I installed Mint with a 4.x kernel. Like I said, wifi was working fine as long as I don't switch to a 5.x kernel.

Boot into the live session of the Mint 20 DVD / USB thumb drive, and show me the output of the terminal commands I mentioned in my first posting,

Sorry for the delay - the file I saved from my live session to my local drive somehow doesn't show up at all even searching as root for hidden files, so I rebooted with the 5.40 kernel to generate the output, and am now back on 4.15.x.

The only thing that strikes me as wrong is this output:

Code: Select all

Power Management:on
That should of course be tweaked to be off.

Anyway: I advise to stick to the 4.15.x kernel series for now. Each time a newer kernel arrives in the 5.4.x series, test it.
