[SOLVED] Install Nvidia Graphic Driver 450.57 on Linux Mint 20

Post by memint »

Hi,

After install NVIDIA repository (ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa) Driver Manager offers the option of the new NVIDIA 450.57 driver but does not allow installation as shown below:

"Package dependencies cannot be resolved
This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time."

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

nvidia-driver-450: Depends: libnvidia-gl-450 (= 450.57-0ubuntu0~0.20.04.2) but 450.57-0ubuntu0~0.20.04.2 is to be installed

Is it something that I should re-install these drivers or wait LM20 solve these requested packages?

If you check this thread. Pjotr links to his blog page with specific instructions on installing the 450 driver through PPA. Maybe something in his instructions can help you.

I followed Pjotr post and managed to install the 450 driver.

However, it doesn't start 'NVIDIA X Server Settings'. And if I start it later taskbar icon is missing.
I was also unable to use the external monitor connected via HDMI using the driver settings.

Maybe I'll post these issues in this suggested post.

Maybe everything didn't install properly or there is some stuff left over from your prior installs interfering with this install. Can you post an update to the system info your first post?

About 'NVIDIA X Server Settings':
I noticed that the version of nvidia-driver I still have installed is 'nvidia-settings (440.82-0ubuntu0.20.04.1)'. I didn't find an update in 'ppa repository: graphics-drivers/ppa'. However the application can be run from menu (issues: no autostart and not displaying icon on the taskbar as I said above)

About external monitor connected via HDMI:
Now I'm running in 'NVIDIA On Demand' mode and reading the documentation at https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverR ... 2107/en-us
and trying to find out how to setup external monitor as it is recognized by settings.

Under the Additional Information tab on the link you posted is the link to the Readme file. There is a section for "Configuring X for the NVIDIA Driver". Maybe there are some other threads on this forum about configuring it.

I don't know enough about the software to hazard a guess as to why the X Server Settings are still showing a version of the prior video driver rather than the latest one you installed. I state it is a version of the prior driver because it is showing the Unbuntu point release which is not yet in use by Mint. I'm not sure how that happened or if that might be why you are seeing funky things happen.

Maybe someone else with more knowledge than I presently have can shed some light on this issue.

I can not say if it helps but you might consider uninstalling first the complete driver package you have installed, that creates the fallback to nouveaux driver, also be sure that you purge everything from that package with auto-remove option or manually

then after reboot you do a new install of the third party driver package bu read first at nvidia of your card is supported and even it is it means nothing, in my cases is working correctly only the nvidia-390 and all newer package have the nvidia support for my card but somewhere on the way to Ubuntu it is lost

the driver manager probably will not be the best tool to resolve your issue like it wasn't in my case and I did it from console, that works

may be this page will help you if you're not familare with the command line options

Someone on a different thread was having issues with NVIDIA driver and X Server. That person was able to get clues as to what needed fixed by checking this log file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I'm back after a while to answer some questions:

- I installed nvidia-prime-applet again (removed when uninstalled nvidia packages). Now I have the taskbar icon back.

- I still have nvidia-settings version (440.82-0ubuntu0.20.04.1). Update is not present at ppa repository. I found files on this link https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-settings/ but I decide not to use this since it is working in some way. Better wait .deb package.

- Using the "On Demand" mode, I realized that I needed to activate external monitor in LM20 "Display" settings. It was my mistake and now I have it working! Before that, I tried to config xorg.conf file without success, in the end I didn't have to change any settings for 'Offloading Graphics Display'
BUT
Now I have an issue: in my dual monitor setup I have notebook below and external monitor above. I use the Panel on top of the notebook screen. I can't drag/move any window up to external monitor. And nothing happens when use the command 'Move to the other monitor'. It seems that Panel is literally blocking this action. It does not happen if I configure the monitor in other positions (below ou right/left side) or if I move Panel to bottom, left or right (then I can move any window freely).

- As recommended above I will explore var/log/Xorg.0.log

The only possibility (other than it maybe being a bug) was I wonder if somehow there is a setting in X Server that is preventing this one orientation from working as you expect it to work.

I will change the status of this post to SOLVED because I was able to solve installation issue. I started another post to deal more specifically with the monitor configuration issue.
