Speed and mtu issues with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8100 / 8101L / 8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Post by Jeronimo17 »

Hi,
With an old laptop that I always use, now I realize that the internet is slow downloading single-connection, and I have changed the MTU to 1400 and it is perfect, why is this happening? I already had that feeling for a long time that in M$ the internet went faster

With M$ a MTU 1500 goes perfect

MTU 1500 vs 1400, my connection is 100/100 Mb/s (This happens with any download)

How about a speed test in browser?
https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?httpsok=0

Is the firewall active and did you add rules, specifically ICMP?
I gloomily came to the ironic conclusion that if you take a highly intelligent person and give them the best possible, elite education, then you will most likely wind up with an academic who is completely impervious to reality.

That website is slow, but http speed test in multi-connection is fine, like axel with multi-download

Multi connection downloads go well with 1500 mtu
Simple download with firefox, slow with 1500 mtu but fast with 1400 mtu

Firewall off

Code: Select all

sudo iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Perfect ping always

Linux Mint 19.3 "Tricia" - Release amd64
With the live distribution, the same happens from 1415 mtu, the speed drops steeply

https://askubuntu.com/questions/795526/ ... -of-a-ping

tune it accordingly, there are differences even with my newer realtek 8169 based adaptor. I won't give you the value I ended up using as your ISP and router may favour different values.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

But other PCs on the same network with Linux Mint do not have that problem, nor does this same PC with 1500 in Windows, I would ensure problems with the Driver, is there not another for this model? Or some adjustment in the windows driver that affects Linux? (flip-flop permanent in the chip?)

nothing in the windows driver affects how the device operates when you boot linux or vice versa. I believe it may be power management related (linux power management being more aggressive for the device) and there are no alternative drivers. Make sure you set the adaptor to auto-negotiate or ignore too instead of fixing it to full duplex 100 or 1000. In fact if I put the correct fixed gigabit full duplex values then the connection manager reports no wire.
