Hi

I've installed the Nvidia 440 driver as recommended.
nvidia-settings does not open

Can anyone help please?
Nvidia site says my driver is 450 for some reason but it results in blackscreen. So I went back to the recommended driver but still the display uses the onboard and I can't choose.
Many thanks,

Just tried to hook up an external monitor via HDMI and USBC
Mint does not recognise either.
Display settings show just the laptop

You have very new hardware. The launch date of the Ryzen 4600H CPU was on 1-6-20. The author of this topic also has an AMD+Nvidia hybrid graphics laptop, which has a 4800H CPU with the same launch date. Follow his instructions:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=325007

You will first need a newer kernel to provide better support, at least the 5.7.1 kernel. The latest version now requires purchasing a license, but you can get an older version here:
https://github.com/teejee2008/ukuu/releases

Download the ukuu-v18.9.1-amd64.deb file. Install the 5.7.1 kernel. Reboot and select the new kernel at the grub menu. When you get to the desktop, post the output of inxi -Gx to check if that solved the hardware acceleration problem.

The next step is to install the recommended Nvidia driver in Driver Manager.

You have to follow the next steps in that linked topic. I have added them below:
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=323641

Open the File Manager. Create a document in Home (/home/your-user-name) named .login and add these lines:

Code: Select all

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0
xrandr --auto
Right click on the file and select Properties > Permissions. Mark the checkbox next to Allow executing file as program.

Open the 70-linuxmint.conf file: xed admin:///etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/70-linuxmint.conf

Add this line: display-setup-script=/home/your-user-name/.login, changing your-user-name to your actual user name.

Create an xorg.conf file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "amdgpu"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "amdgpu"
    Driver "amdgpu"
    BusID "PCI:5:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "amdgpu"
    Device "amdgpu"
EndSection
Reboot.

So kernel 5.7.1, driver 440 does not work, 450 works
So I've installed the 450 using driver manager after adding the graphics ppa.
Right now:
prime-select is nvidia
nvidia-smi displays X process
Display sees both screens but does not project to the external LG
So I can see the properties of the LG and try to change settings but it stays black.
Nvidia settings opens and "sees" the LG
But it stays black.
Connected via the HDMI.
Usb-C port does not work at all for the screen output.

When I created xorg.conf as you advised the NVIDIA daemon would not load at boot crashing the boot process.
So I almost got it working before creating the xorg.conf.
Can you help please?

Did you do the other steps; create the .login file and edit the 70-linuxmint.conf file?

Yes

And since then crash at boot.
Nvidia demon cant start.
Before just a driver manager install of the 450 did result in the above display situation.
So something got broke with the new files config.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter virtual console tty1. Use this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

If you can't enter tty1, then select Advanced options > Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt ” and press ENTER. Press ENTER again.

Use this command to change the file permissions to read and write: mount -o remount,rw /

Remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

Can you get back to the desktop now? If you can, post the output of inxi -Gx

SOLVED IT

Did a vanilla install of Ubuntu 20.
Updtate, upgrade
Install ukuu or other way of getting the latest kernel.
I went for the latest 5.8.3 kernel.
Then add the graphics ppa
Install the 450 (shows as open source)driver via driver manager (correct for the 1650Ti , 1650 is 440 driver)
Check that prime status shows nvidia
Modify /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf

add
Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes"

I also disabled wayland as a tip from another post I found so the display runs in X.
and it worked.

Kernel works fine with the AMD board with no parameters, but I have IOMMU disabled in BIOS, apparently it should work now with 5.8 so maybe going to try after playing a bit more.

Many thanks for your help.
