[solved] I need CHOWN help

Post by Contra »

I have used Linux in one form or another since 1991. Mostly off than on.
I recently came back to Mint 20.04 and I think I am gonna stay for the remainder of the processor/mobo life.

I have 3 HDD and 1 SDD that were all being used in Windows 10 and now that I have installed Mint on my main (SDD) and 2 HDD work fine and the "permissions" show I am the owner, but 1 says 'root' is the owner and I want to change to me.
Keep in mind I am an extreme noob at using Sudo and a terminal in general. Can you guys help me or is my 4 terabyte just out of luck till I switch back to Windows?

I know I will get back into the swing of things after a while but for now I need help...lol.

Are these disks mounting automatically on startup, or do you get them to mount by opening them in your file manager?

Terminal command cat /etc/fstab will be useful, as well as blkid. Also inxi -Fpxxxz as this gives useful system info. I'll likely think of others in due course.

Please use the </> button and then paste the outputs between the resultant
and
tags.

What we are trying to determine here is the mountpoint, which you need to take ownership of.

Ok, well I had Window$ on here and the HDD was mounted after the install of Linux but without allowing me to access (or create folders or delete or even move them). So I downloaded KDE Partition and formatted it as I really didn't need to files on it. But is now shows 'root' as the owner.
I am not root.
And yes they do mount automatically.

Re: I need CHOWN help

That's great so far but could you do the same for the other two, and also mount | column -t cheers. Need to know exactly how the system sees the disk and its mount point. These between them should provide ample data for me or someone else if I happen to be offline for a short while! :)

It's normal for a manually mounted drive to be owned by root the way the graphical partition managers do it. Just need to change it by sudo chown $USER:$USER /mountpoint; substituting mountpoint with yours.

Could you provide that last one again after accessing the drive? I'm assuming it's formatted and partitioned!

sudo parted -l should reveal the condition it's in now.

Will be offline for a short while.
