Linux Mint 20 Crashes randomly

Post by Sanjeev254 »

My pc(HP 20 All in one pc) started freezing from yesterday. A few weeks ago I uninstalled windows 10 from my computer, before that I used to dual boot. I used to have this problem about once in two weeks, but from yesterday, the frequency has increased drastically. Yesterday, it froze twice, and today, it has already frozen 4-5 times. I'll also mention that my harddrive continues to spin but the display freezes completely, the audio from half a sec before crash keeps looping, I can't even move mouse or press a key they don't do anything.

I'm almost at my limit and considering switching to something else as I can't handle what became daily crashes. I do some really important study work, so, I need my pc.

Welcome to the forum, Sanjeev254.

I also have Linux Mint 20 with Cinnamon. I have the latest LTS kernel installed and it is 5.4.0-45-generic. Your information lists you having 5.4.0-7642-generic. Is there a specific reason you are not using the usual LTS kernel?

If you go to Update Manager and select View>Linux Kernels and click Continue you will see what kernels you have installed and active on your computer. Perhaps you might have better stability if you use the 5.4.0-45-generic kernel.

I saw that there was a kernel update out, so, I thought it might be a good idea to update it, and, that's why I'm using that kernel.

Where did you see kernel 5.4.0-7642-generic available as an update?

The latest Linux Mint 20 LTS kernel update which became available within the last week or so was from 5.4.0-42-generic to 5.4.0-45-generic. Try using the 5.4.0-45-generic kernel and see if the crashing stops.

I using 5.4.0-45-gneric kernel, and so far I haven't experienced any crashes. If it crashes again, I'll post it here.

Using 'newer' kernels can introduce or exacerbate any existing issues on older hardware like yours. Best to stick with LTS ones where possible.

Check your sources list. It should only contain the official sources, and not some garbage source for weird kernels (which it unfortunately probably does).

Note that any other sources than the official ones, must have been added by you personally. No other way.

PPA are certainly more trouble than they are worth sometimes.

I removed the 5.4.0-7642-generic kernel about a week ago and haven't experienced any issues with 5.4.0-45-generic kernel up until today, but today, it has froze 5 times already.
I should also mention that I have recently installed kde plasma DE, and when I switched back to cinnamon, it was freezing even more frequently

Mint only supports Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce desktops. It does not support kde Plasma DE and the fact you had no problems until you installed that is a pretty good indication of the what is causing your current problems.

Well, you probably have a messed-up Frankenstein system by now. Do a clean installation of Mint 20 Cinnamon and take it from there.
