[SOLVED] USB ports not working on mint 19.3 excpet USB 3 & USB 3.1 ports.

Post by catman43 »

Since installing linux mint 19.3 I am unable to use any other than USB 3 and USB 3.1 slots. None of the other USB ports work on the box. It will not read any disks or devices or the wifi adapter in non USB 3 / 3.1 ports. The only thing I have done to this machine is install a new USB wifi adapter.

all usb ports work in UEFI/BIOS

Thanks

Install and try the first and the last 4.15 kernels.

Thanks asinoro, unfortunately neither of those kernel versions corrected the problem when loaded.

Thanks again asinoro, the devices were not shown and this didnt change when i changed grub to include GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usbcore.autosuspend=-1" unfortunately this didnt work and as far as i can see no device is recognised in any other port other than the two USB 3 ports and the single stabdard sized USB 3.1 port (I havent tried the smaller one but 3.1 seems to work)

When attempting to boot from a startup USB in a non USB3 or 3.1 slot the thumb drive flashes and boot up begins but fails in both UEFI mode and Legacy BIOS. I get the following error messages followed by an initramfs prompt:

USB 1-4;device descriptor read /64 error – 32
&
USB USB-1-port 4 unable to enumerate USB device

When booting with the USB in a USB 3 port I can boot into the live disk but the non USB 3/3.1 ports do not detect any devices.

All USB ports work when I boot from a windows installation on a separate disk and, as i said above, all USB ports are available in UEFI/BIOS because in the boot override menu it lists the Toshiba disk as ‘UEFI Toshiba device’ and just ‘Toshiba device’.

The solution to this can be found here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... linux-mint

If the IOMMU controller is off the USB 3 ports work but the others do not and if IOMMU is on the non USB 3 ports work but USB 3.0 does not as described in the above fix.

Adding

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash iommu=soft"
to grub fixes both issues.

Thanks
