WiFi Driver Install 'deb' FAILS: Realtek 8811au

Post by Webtest »

Esteemed Forum Participants and Lurkers!
NOTE: LiveMedia Linux Mint 18.3 Mate 64-bit

It is extremely rare to have problems installing an application in a running LiveMedia system by doing a 'dpkg' with the correct Ubuntu deb file, however, I am stumped by this one.

I have an "OURLiNK WU636 WiFi USB Adapter" (Realtek RTL8811AU chipset) that works just fine in Win 10, but finding and installing a driver for Linux Mint is a real challenge. After a LOT of searching through hints of Linux success, I found RTL8811AU wifi adaptor working on XUbuntu which uses a Xenial (-> LM 18.3) deb file:
rtl8812au-dkms_4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg-0ubuntu2_all.deb

This deb file actually BUILDS the driver and installs it ... BUT ... it FAILS in an obscure "Android" section on my LM 18.3 system. The 'make' file that fails is in this deb package, and here is the make.log:

Code: Select all

I am far more an 'appliance user' and definitely NOT a developer, and I would sincerely appreciate any comments, suggestions, and assistance with this problem. Once I get the build to complete, I need to isolate the correct driver and figure out a script to install it without having to go through the build process on a running LiveMedia system for installing it some machines in remote locations.

Thanks sleeper12 ...

Yes, I found that website earlier, but is CoBAR - Convoluted beyond all recognition. I will look at it again though.

The 'Makefile' referenced in my post is ALSO very convoluted ... 1500 lines worth. I tried to depopulate all of the config dependent scripting and took it down to just over 300 lines, but I don't know how accurate it is, and I still can't follow it. It is quite perplexing that it references 'Android' at all. If my 'surgery' on the Makefile was accurate, only single occurrence of 'android' was left:

Code: Select all

########### COMMON ############
_OS_INTFS_FILES :=	os_dep/osdep_service.o \
			os_dep/linux/os_intfs.o \
			os_dep/linux/$(HCI_NAME)_intf.o \
			os_dep/linux/$(HCI_NAME)_ops_linux.o \
			os_dep/linux/ioctl_linux.o \
			os_dep/linux/xmit_linux.o \
			os_dep/linux/mlme_linux.o \
			os_dep/linux/recv_linux.o \
			os_dep/linux/ioctl_cfg80211.o \
			os_dep/linux/rtw_cfgvendor.o \
			os_dep/linux/rtw_android.o \
			os_dep/linux/rtw_proc.o
It is a shame that the OurLiNK dongle works so well, but is so difficult to install in Linux.

Thanks again for any and all comments, suggestions, and assistance.

No luck sleeper12 ...

I tried the process from website but I didn't get very far ... on page 2 ...

Code: Select all

mint@mint ~ $ sudo apt install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) dkms unzip git
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
unzip is already the newest version (6.0-20ubuntu1).
linux-headers-4.10.0-38-generic is already the newest version (4.10.0-38.42~16.04.1).
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
build-essential : Depends: g++ (>= 4:5.2) but it is not going to be installed

So, I'm still hung out to dry.

Just a stab in the dark here...have you tried running the "driver manger", or as my version of linux calls it, "additional drivers", that will look for 3rd party drivers to find and install an updated WiFi driver for you???...DAMIEN

Can you fix the broken packages in Synaptic, Edit, Fix Broken Packages?

You may also be able to fix any "broken packages" by using the code provided below...just copy and paste into the terminal...DAMIEN

Code: Select all

Thank you both - DAMIEN1307 & sleeper12

I tried both of your suggestions but absolutely nothing changed in the Makefile.

You have one of the (pretty rare) "harder" Realtek chipsets, in that I couldn't find a clear unequivocal solution. However, try what Jeremy31 wrote here:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1185986

Looks like it might work for the rtl8811au chipset as well.

Thanks Pjotr!

I gave the 'answer' in the referenced post a try, but was not successful ...

Code: Select all

mint / # ./dkms-install.sh
-bash: ./dkms-install.sh: No such file or directory
I looked in the entire project directory and only found 2 shell scripts:

Code: Select all

/var/lib/dkms/rtl8812au/4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg/build/rtl8812au
    tools/install-and-sign-ubuntu.sh
    tools/WiFi_Direct_User_Interface/install.sh
There were some positive responses to the 'answer', so I can only surmise that there is some default Ubuntu "dkms-install" script that isn't in the Aircrack project. Also, in looking through a couple of files, there were only references to 8812, 8814, and 8821 ... not 8811 (itf that means anything at all ...).

Try this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install rtl8812au-dkms

Esteemed Forum Participants & Lurkers:
Here is a detailed and very informative article about WiFi adapters that is very pertinent to this discussion. It will "pug your nose and curl your toes". It is incredible that this problem has been around for at least 5 years!
