Linux Mint 19.2 & 19.3 freezes randomly and almost daily

Post by boxereighty »

My Dell Optiplex 7010 now running 19.3 Cinnamon seems to boot normally but will randomly freeze. Sometimes it reboots on it's own immediately but freezes again within a few minutes. Since the mouse and keyboard are frozen holding the power button is the only shutdown path available. This occurred regularly on 19.2 and continues after upgrade to 19.3. After a freeze and hard shutdown computer will not reboot, power button flashes orange/white. After 1hr downtime a reboot becomes possible. If it doesn't freeze again right away on reboot it will run, at least for a while. I've had it run fine for several days then freeze after 5-6 hours of up time. Then next day it won't make it 5 minutes before a freeze.

Check and/or replace the CMOS battery on the mobo with an Energizer or DuraCell. Lifespan is usually 3-5 years.
Disable hibernation.
Good luck.

How can I disable HIBERNATE? If found this and entered it:
sudo grep hibernate /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/ -Rl/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla
Is that correct?

Computer is a fresh refurb. The battery was supposed to have been replaced. I'd rather pursue disabling hibernate first.

Try this:

- check for a BIOS update and when available, install it;

- do a clean fresh installation of Mint 20 and take it from there.

I entered the above listed command. Hibernate is not now an option shown during shutdown. But honestly I think I removed that when I installed 19.2 originally. The CMOS battery has slightly over 3v so it looks like it was recently replaced. I'll see what happens from here. Maybe that fixed the problem.

I'm not interested in rebuilding the system into LM20. If I can't get this machine to work with 19.3 I'll use another machine and OS altogether.

I wonder a bit, whether the specific Mesa software from the oibaf PPA might play a role and be involved in the crashes.

Code: Select all

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 2500 (IVB GT1)
  v: 4.2 Mesa 20.3.0-devel (git-4500e6e 2020-09-02 bionic-oibaf-ppa)
  direct render: Yes
Is there a specific reason to use Mesa software from this PPA? Oibaf

-- I have the same mesa version 20.3.0 as boxereighty. But regardless since, I've never had random crashes like you described.
My rig since at least May 2017 ( vid card was bought then...the rest was late 2015)
4790k cpu ( thus HD 3000 aka upgraded little brother..basically to the 2500 igpu)
rx 580 8GB vid card
z97mpro 4 matx mobo
16GB of ram

(shrugs). I'm not convinced that the mesa version is the problem. I also used this exact same machine in LM 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 19.1, 19.2, 19.3 and now on LM 20 cinnamon and never had random crashing problems be it only using iGPU built into my cpu or with the rx 580 installed.

This smells more like hardware problem to me. Has the power supply in that optiplex ever been replaced? That machine is probably 7+ years old easily given it's an ivy bridge cpu. If you've already ruled out the cmos battery, I recommend replacing the power supply ( aka psu) with a solid new one if you know you'll be keeping that machine for a decent chunk of years longer.

Seasonic, NZXT, Corsair, even Cooler Master are all solid choices with good warranties to boot. Avoid cheap off brands like logisys and other dime a dozen best buy cheaper models. Thermaltake is kind of hit or miss so I'd say avoid them also overall.

80 plus gold is your friend. However you need not get something that is double the max supported wattage versus that stock one unless you're planning to add a video card and specifically a medium power hungry one like a rtx 3070 if you want to get into hardcore gaming. If not..just shoot for any 450 watt to 600 watt recommended brand and you'll be golden.

So no hardcore gaming = 450 watts or above is plenty with a 80 plus gold rating or better in the $50.00 onward range USD price range. newegg, amazon, ebay, maybe microcenter (shrugs). Beyond what others have recommended, I'm temporarily out of ideas to rule out. --

As far as I know it came with the installation of 19.2 or upgrade to 19.3. I didn't consciously install it. Is there an alternative?

Yes indeed. Those are my thoughts exactly. I just want to rule out any glaring software issues first. I'm not a tech or a system expert.

FWIW, booting a live 64bit Puppy Linux disk into this machine just resulted in the same failure. I'm thinking that pretty much cinches to bad power supply theory?

I am afraid that your memory plays a trick on you here. Software obtainable from a Launchpad PPA never comes pre-installed with any Linux Mint release. Plus, I am 100% certain that no Oibaf Mesa driver has been found on any Mint 19.2 and Mint 19.3 installation here.
Anyway, as motoryzen seems to consider the same oibaf mesa software stable, ignore my question, please.

I'm generally clueless on these issues, but the log makes me wonder if there's something amiss with the screensaver:

Code: Select all

cinnamon-session[1161]: WARNING: t+6.10473s: Detected that screensaver has appeared on the bus

Disabling the screensaver should be a good test.

EDIT: The test with Puppy probably indicates I'm way off.

Screen saver is now set to "NEVER" in system settings. It was set to 1hr before and I don't think the session lasted that long before the freeze. Can't hurt though.

Indeed, but I'm almost certain that isn't the issue now. I'm starting to heavily lean toward power supply as well. I got lucky. When mine went, it just gave up completely. No playing "Guess which issue we'll have today" in my case.

Ok, it's a search for a good PSU. I had a "no name" replacement for another computer last about 3 months so thanks for the recommended brands to search. I've been down the "no name" cheap PSU path and once is enough. Would a Dell replacement PSU be OK? I don't really need more power than original No gaming involved. It will probably be several weeks before it's marked "Solved"

Some six months ago, there were serious stability issues on a new machine (with both an AMD CPU and AMD graphics) on which I had installed graphics software from that oibaf PPA (including mesa, if I recall correctly).

Did a clean fresh re-installation of the OS and the stability issues were gone. I'll definitely never install anything from that PPA again, nor would I recommend it to anybody.

So I suspect that the issues of the OP are self-inflicted.
