Medion notebook dual boot: Azerty built-in keyboard not working

Post by toma1970 »

Hi,
My first time asking for help. Till now always found solutions on this forum (thx for that!) or on the net. Apologies for my English, no native speaker.
Keyboard is working fine in Win10 and Grub, but once in Mint 20, only touchpad and on-screen keyboard are working.
Since more than a week trying to make it work, but still no solution found.
I just did an upgrade to Mint 20.1, but still built-in keyboard not working...

Thx in advance for the time and the help!

Tomas

Is there any possibility that the 11th gen intel core i5-1135G7 or the intel Iris Xe is not supported yet? I read on this forum that some kernels don't support it yet. Although mine installed and active is the 5.8.0-36.
A few days ago I even installed manually kernel 5.10, but no effect on the built-in keyboard.

When I log in in Win 10, then keyboard works fine...as well on the Grub menu.

Well, xinput confirms that the kernel has a problem recognizing how the keyboard is interfaced.

For what it's worth, this particular keyboard problem with the Medion S15450 laptop has been reported under Ubuntu 20.x, so it's something that Mint has inherited.

Is the keyboard layout non-English?

May we see the output of the following two terminal commands?...

Code: Select all

cat /etc/default/keyboard
dmesg | egrep -i i2c
Linux Mint 21 Vanessa, MATE 1.26.0, kernel 5.15.0*, Dell 2-in-1

For a laptop, I expect xinput to show "AT Translated Set 2" slave keyboard or something similar. Yours isn't showing this.

With Windows and GRUB happy, this can't be a hardware problem. Have you tried manually configuring your keyboard layout?

With dual boot you can use Windows 10 to glean specifications about your keyboard which may be useful to configure Mint. In Windows search for msinfo32 and click on System Information. Under System Summary, select Components -> Input -> Keyboard.

To configure the keyboard language/layout in Linux Mint, click on the Mint panel (taskbar) logo and type keyboard into the search box, then tap [Keyboard] from the list to open the configuration window. At the top of the window, select [Layouts]; then at the bottom-left tap the [+] plus symbol to add a layout. A list of input sources for language/layout will appear; scroll down or just start typing a language name. There are several for Belgium, including with AZERTY; and also other language/layout combinations, e.g. French with AZERTY. Select one and then tap the [Preview] button to review the physical keyboard diagram, which should resemble your actual keyboard. If it's one you want, tap [Add]. A country flag icon will appear at the righthand side of the Mint panel. Whenever you tap on that flag, it will display a list of all the languages/layouts that you've enabled. Tap on whichever one you want immediately enabled. The currently displayed flag is a visible reminder.

Reboot, to make sure everything you've done sticks.

With the non-English layout selected, does your keyboard now work as expected?

Activate the non-English language/layout, then again post the output of the following terminal commands...

Code: Select all

cat /etc/default/keyboard
xinput --list
Linux Mint 21 Vanessa, MATE 1.26.0, kernel 5.15.0*, Dell 2-in-1
AMD Ryzen 7 5825U / Barcelo iGPU - 14" WUXGA Touchscreen

I tried several times to manually configure my keyboard.
Going in System Settings - Keyboard, then the TAB 'Layouts', I only have 'Belgian' selected. I deleted 'US'. I even tried the French layout because I know it's an Azerty layout.
What is strange as well, when I boot into Mint, the on-screen keyboard ( for entering password) appears in Qwerty, and on that same screen, upper right corner, a small keyboard icon is shown with only 'US' as option.
The problem is (I think) that my physical keyboard layout is one without a separate numeric keypad, and I can't find such one in System Settings - Keyboard, Tab 'Layouts'.
Even the on-screen keyboard is Qwerty (even with Belgian selected).
So, the output of the commands you ask are the same as posted above.

Code: Select all

tomas@tomas-comp:~$ cat /etc/default/keyboard
# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

Methinks keyboard layout is the issue here.

Hmm, the GRUB and GRUB2 guides say, "The US keyboard layout is the only one available at boot time". So perhaps don't entirely remove all US English layouts from your options.

Is your Belgian AZERTY keyboard locale for Dutch, French, German, or Walloon?

What does Windows say about your keyboard? From System Information, under System Summary, to Components -> Input -> Keyboard. Click on "Item", then Ctrl-A to select all text, then Ctrl-C to copy all -- then Ctrl-V in Notepad to paste into a text file.

On my Dell 2-in-1 notebook it looks like this...

Code: Select all

Description	Standard PS/2 Keyboard
Name	Enhanced (101- or 102-key)
Layout	00020409
PNP Device ID	ACPI\DLLK09E3\4&1224AAD4&0

This is what I found when typing 'locale' in the terminal

Code: Select all

tomas@tomas-comp:~$ locale
LANG=nl_BE.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=nl_BE
LC_CTYPE="nl_BE.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_TIME=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE="nl_BE.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES="nl_BE.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_NAME=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=nl_BE.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

Don't you think I better change the title of this post into "Azerty keyboatd without numeric keypad not working after dual boot win 10 and mint 20".
Maybe this is easier to find for other people with same issue...

Even after deleting US keyboard, keeping only the Belgian one, at startup, log-in screen (Mint) and on-screen keyboard (once logged in), the only keyboard available, is the on-screen US keyboard....strange ;-)

The issue being the layout is only a hunch I'm following at this point, the thread topic is still appropriate for what we actually know at this point.

By the locale of your keyboard I mean what you see when you look at what's printed on the keys. French characters would be different from German, etc. What are the keytops telling us about the language?

I wouldn't entirely delete having the US English option loaded, since this is the only layout that GRUB accepts, and the one that works! It appears to me that something in the kernel is borking the configuration or keycode translation, so I won't yet trust what locale is showing.

Doing some research, and if you type "Ergoline 3200503 SET toetsenbord + numeriek" into google, then in images, the picture is similar as my keyboard, but in AZERTY...

I tried as well following commands, but unsuccessful:

dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
service keyboard-setup restart

I'm not sure I can post following:

"I tried all of the above on an Ubuntu 16.04 and only the temporary solution setxkbmap xx did it for me so I manually included it in the .bashrc profile: sudo nano ~/.bashrc and then type setxkbmap xxreplacing xx with yor language code"

which I found on an 'askubuntu' forum with the title "How to permanently configure keyboard"...but all without success...

Thx again for all the time and effort you are putting in this ;-)

In the mean time, I reinstalled 20.1 from a live USB, but still the same problem, AZERTY keyboard not working.
Any more ideas ;-)

Thx!

I'm not giving up on this just yet, but it requires running down a deep rabbit-hole I've not yet explored. A little frustrating without an AZERTY keyboard for hands-on tinkering -- but I actually enjoy this kind of pastime, as a retired electronics engineer with a passion for firmware development.

This exact technical issue has been flagged to Ubuntu developers, and hopefully Medion's engineers get on the ball because Ubuntu-based Linux (including Mint) is among the most widespread. Have you checked into online Ubuntu or Medion communities?

Meanwhile, an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard may be a practical avenue for you?

I've been visiting the fora from Ubuntu and Medion, but not yet actively...
Especially on the askUbuntu forum, I found some people with similar problems, but the solutions & terminal commands & Grub adjustments (like writing codes behind "quiet splash") doesn't work for my keyboard...
Probably as you said, it's a kernel issue...maybe I'll have to post it in the comments of the official "how to upgrade to Linux Mint 20.1" site (blog.linuxmint.com)?

Re: Keyboard not working after dual boot win10 and mint 20

Post by hglee »

Did this keyboard issue come up only in an upgrade, from an earlier release? If so, go back to what worked, just for now.

If I were in your position I'd also be booting other, non-Ubuntu-based, Linux distributions. Not necessarily looking to switch camps, but to be able to say whether or not this particular issue is limited to specific branches of the kernel. For example, if Mint LMDE works, which uses the upstream Debian kernel, that could suggest the problem was introduced at Ubuntu.

Did your Mint LiveDVD/USB not show the problem before it was installed onto your HDD?

Try the LiveDVD/USB of other well-supported distributions such as Fedora, openSUSE, Arch, Manjaro, or others high up on the list at Distrowatch. There's also Intel's Clear Linux, which AMD also uses for testing their CPUs.
