macbook freezes when waking from suspend

Post by bradhaack »

New install on old macbook. I have it setup to suspend when I close the lid. Sometimes it wakes up OK, but sometimes I get the login screen, enter the password and it freezes and won't log me in. The only solution I've found is to reboot.

Welcome to the forum, bradhaack.

The LTS kernel for LM20 is the 5.4 kernel and I recommend you use it instead of the 5.8 kernel with this computer because you are using the Nvidia-340 driver which was never designed to be used with kernels higher than 5.4. It's possible that may be causing the issue you are seeing.

According to Nvidia Support timeframes for Unix legacy GPU releases,"The Linux 340.* legacy driver series is the last to support the G8x, G9x, and GT2xx GPUs, and motherboard chipsets based on them. Support for X.Org xserver version 1.20 was added to the 340.* legacy driver series with version 340.107, and support for Linux kernels up to Linux 5.4 was added with version 340.108. No further releases from the 340.* series are planned."

If the kernel change does not help, perhaps something in this thread "2010 MacBook Pro screen garbled upon resuming from suspend" Solved might have some information that could help your situation.

thx
I've reset it to use the latest 5.4 kernel. I read somewhere that the 5.8 kernel was 'better' for something similar so I installed that. To fix it, I couldn't get the grub menu until I commented out some lines in the grub cfg file.
#GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
#GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
Then in 'Update Manager', view-linux kernels, and deleted the 5.8 kernels.

I'll check out that other thread, I do get garbled screens sometime

Testing...
