Blank screen issue at boot

Postby tinny4u » Tue Oct 13, 2009 4:01 pm

Hello

I have a really frustrating issue with Mint 7

Mint appears to be booting correctly (showing the progress bar), but 90% of the time instead of showing the login screen I am presented with a blank white screen. If I press ctrl + alt + F1 I am presented with a terminal session that looks fine.

The laptop im having issues with is a NEC Versa M400 - 240DW

Some details about the video card

Code: Select all

> lspci

Code: Select all

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

Im guessing there is something wrong with my xorg config???

Heres my xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier    "Default Screen"
    Monitor        "Configured Monitor"
    Device        "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
    #Option        "UseFBDev"        "true"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option    "DontZap"    "False"
EndSection

Any ideas??? Thanks

It might help to see if Xorg.0.log has recorded any errors:

Code: Select all

grep '(EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
grep '(WW)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thanks for that helpful tip!
Here is the output of those commands

Code: Select all

grep '(EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Code: Select all

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

Code: Select all

grep '(WW)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Code: Select all

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.
(WW) intel(0): libpciaccess reported 0 rom size, guessing 64kB
(WW) intel(0): Register 0x61200 (PP_STATUS) changed from 0xc0000008 to 0xd000000a
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS before: on, ready, sequencing idle
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS after: on, ready, sequencing on
(WW) intel(0): DRI2 requires UXA
(WW) intel(0): xf86AllocateGARTMemory: allocation of 1536 pages failed
(WW) intel(0): Allocation error, framebuffer compression disabled
(WW) intel(0): xf86AllocateGARTMemory: allocation of 10 pages failed
(WW) intel(0): Chosen PLL clock of 66.6 Mhz more than 2% away from desired 65.0 Mhz
(WW) intel(0):   Hardware claims pipe A is on while software believes it is off

Looks like there might be some useful info in these outputs??? This problem is still beyond me.

Thanks

The XOrg intel drivers appear to be have been, and in this case continue to be quite buggy.

Two potential fixes may be found here, they consist of either rolling back the driver or rolling the kernel forward. Both repeatedly appear as solutions in various Ubuntu bug reports relating to the specific problem seen in the Xorg.0.log here.
