i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A AND snd_pcm_avail()...value...exceptionally large ¿Cause thermald.service?

Post by Jeronimo17 »

I come from here viewtopic.php?f=49&t=340615

The keyboard stops responding and this error appears, it has always been playing in 3D, the mouse and everything else continues to work, only the keyboard is blocked (also the power button, I have to turn off removing the battery + charger).

With pcie_aspm=off it seems that it was holding up without problems until today

Well, what you have there won't help. Go into Update Manager. select Linux Kernels from the View menu, install kernel 5.8 and reboot.

Under /etc/modprobe.d/, you will need to create a configuration file i915.conf, if it does not already exist. Then, inside this file, you will need to add the following line:

Code: Select all

options i915 enable_psr=0
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A

Post by Jeronimo17 »

I tried it but it seems silly to me because this already gave me 0

Code: Select all

sudo cat /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_psr
0
I'm proving just the opposite

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1 pcie_aspm=off i915.enable_psr=1 i915.disable_power_well=0 i915.enable_fbc=1"
For now without errors, to see if later I try the same online game again, the keyboard crash and the i915 error was just when using ALT + TAB (after many times)

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A

Post by Jeronimo17 »

The problem persists today (I thought not), I don't know what else to try, it only happens playing on Linux and very rarely.

I think just when I press the keyboard for a long time a key in the game, the sound is choppy, the internal keyboard stops responding and the off button does not work or even forcing a while, I have to remove the battery and the source to turn it off.

The funny thing is that although the error speaks of the intel, the graphics continue to work perfectly, the keyboard or shutdown button never work again until the forced restart

Note: USB keyboard and mouse works; windows 10 never crashed like this (although i'm rarely on it)

Edit: Seems to have a lot of relationship with intel_idle.max_cstate=1, so far it has not happened

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A

Post by Jeronimo17 »

For now with this configuration I have not had any crash GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1 pcie_aspm=off intel_idle.max_cstate=1"

But this appears in dmesg, I think that since I have put this configuration, now I have a usb speaker connected and the cut in the music is noticeable at the time of each message appearing

I think everything is related, it seems to me that one of the USB Type C has to do with graphics

Thanks

I edit to add things:
That of the usb error only appears with the configuration of the graphics in prime-select on-demand, In intel only or nvidia only mode it never happens.
I tried all the CS states and the one that seemed most stable is intel_idle.max_cstate = 6 (less USB errors).
In native linux games, the gamma control only works for me in on-demand mode ?¿?¿ (I run with __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 to use nvidia in on-demand mode )

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A

Post by Jeronimo17 »

Let's see if the problem comes from the audio, this happened just when I was playing a new game with background music.

This is the journalctl log, sound starts choppy internal laptop keyboard stops responding and I connect a usb keyboard, to try to turn it off well although finally I have to remove power to turn it off

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A OR snd_pcm_avail() returned a value that is exceptionally large ?¿

Post by Jeronimo17 »

I think that all of the above is worthless.

We could start over

The problem seems to come from thermald.service I have deactivated it with systemctl disable thermald.service and removed the limitation of c-states

And for now I am not experiencing a problem, although I have configured the kernel with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pcie_aspm=off nvidia-drm.modeset=1 enable_psr=0" in /etc/default/grub

Why have I read out there that it usually gives problems with laptops? and on firmware with integrated cooling systems

Maybe it has to do with the temperature error when reading the nvme?

It didn't happen again until today, with heavy use of the integrated keyboard, I wasn't gaming.
But he had nomachine and several consoles.

Total blocking of the keyboard and power button, I had to remove the power supply and battery. :|

Re: i915 *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A OR snd_pcm_avail() returned a value that is exceptionally large ?¿

Are you still using these kernel parameters? I've not heard of the last one. My understanding of it is i915.enable_psr=0.

I am expecting to soon hear of availability of the 5.15 kernel, but until then there is a 5.14-oem kernel available. Your hardware is quite new and it could be there are still optimizations to come in future kernels.

If you want to try the 5.14-oem kernel, you can install the latest one kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and reboot.

No, I've had it that way for a long time.

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pcie_aspm=off nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
I'll try the new kernel, thanks

5.14-oem does not work well for me, I have noticed slowdowns in the mouse when doing some things like opening a program with wine. with 5.13 it never happens.

I'm curious as to why you are using the nvidia-drm.modeset=1? This is info I found for it Understanding nvidia-drm.modeset=1 (NVIDIA Linux driver modesetting). Your computer seems to be somewhat unique with how it compares with other computers with the same install so that kernel parameter may be needed for your particular hardware.

Have you checked recently for any BIOS/UEFI updates from the manufacturer?

Bios yes I have checked every now and then, there has been no new update.

That setting eliminates the screen tearing for me.

Another thing I'm using is viewtopic.php?t=287190 Clevo-xsm-wmi, a driver to control the RGB lights that make up the keyboard, I don't know if that could be creating the lockup that happens so infrequently.
What I hate the most is that the start button does not respond to a general lock as in my old laptop.

I almost messed up, I removed clevo-xsm-wmi and I couldn't reinstall it, it seems that it happens what it says here https://forum.manjaro.org/t/clevo-xsm-w ... 5-10/69747 and https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/clevo-k ... rror/23583,

Code: Select all

insmod: ERROR: could not insert module clevo-xsm-wmi.ko: Invalid module format

No matter how many times I uninstalled and did all the steps again

I managed it by passing the timeshift files.

By the way I see a lot of versions of clevo-xsm-wmi, I don't know which one is the most updated.

Now you have said that I recall reading that in this post so others are using it as well.

Sorry, but I do not know. I would think if they were, there would be some kind of message in dmesg, syslog, or journalctl.
