Radeon 3200 fglrx installs but restart gives blank screen

Postby vie et mort » Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:44 am

EDIT: So I do have an ATI Radeon 3200 and when I go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers It gives me the option to activate the proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver and it installs fine. But when I restart the login screen is black. I've also tried to install the drivers manually (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide) with the same results. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I also recognize that some ATI cards are unsupported now, so if I'm completely out of luck just let me know.

Thank you!

I forgot to mention that I also tired this and it was only after doing this that the FGLRX driver would even finish installing. Prior it would show up but not finish installing:

I have same GPU as your and all is working fine in Jaunty with fglrx.

How I resolved:

Reinstalled a clean copy of Jaunty.
After applying updates, I opened Synaptic and removed all xserver-xorg-* useless packages (related to other VGA). Here's the list:
xserver-xorg-video-all
xserver-xorg-video-apm
xserver-xorg-video-chips
xserver-xorg-video-cirrus
xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-mga
xserver-xorg-video-neomagic
xserver-xorg-video-nv
xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
xserver-xorg-video-rendition
xserver-xorg-video-s3
xserver-xorg-video-s3virge
xserver-xorg-video-savage
xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion
xserver-xorg-video-sis
xserver-xorg-video-sisusb
xserver-xorg-video-tdfx
xserver-xorg-video-trident
xserver-xorg-video-tseng
xserver-xorg-video-voodoo

After, I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package and all dependencies, via Synaptic.
Next step, opened a terminal and typed:
sudo aticonfig --initial -f
Finally, I crossed my fingers and reboot. And I'm still here.
