Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
Again - new to Linux and Mint. Making my way thru a few issues. I started using Timeshift shortly after installing Mint 20.1. After a couple of days I read that it was smarter, logically so, to have the snapshots on a separate USB stick and not any of the Linux partitions. So I started using the USB stick. Working great. 32gb stick so it should be plenty big enough for 5 daily's and 4 weekly's. On to my issue. With the stick in the USB port and the box rebooted the USB stick is not available until I pull it out and re-insert. It's not auto mounted on the reboot. Is there something I need to do so that it is always recognized if I reboot? I have tried to use the check mark "Mount at startup" in "Disks" but that did not work for me. Appreciate some insight. Thanks for looking.

This is one option to consider. Create a shell script to mount the drive and run it at startup with the systemd service.

Re: Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
You haven't said which flavour of mint you are using, cinnamon, mate, xfce?
If cinnamon, in nemo preferences, under media handling check auto mount removable media.

Re: Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
Thanks for the reply AndyMH. That is set as you directed but it's not working. When I reboot the USB stick is not auto mounted for use. I need to take it out and insert it for it to be recognized. If I recall I actually had to stick it into another USB port because the one it was in didn't recognize it until it was removed, inserted into another USB port then reinserted in the original. BTW using Cinnamon.

Re: Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
Unfortunately, mine 'just works' so can't offer any sensible advice.

Re: Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
I would say that is bad advice, although I can see why somebody would think that.I read that it was smarter, logically so, to have the snapshots on a separate USB stick and not any of the Linux partitions.
I say let Timeshift store to any good, persistent place and then back it up as you would your other data.
Re: Timeshift USB Stick - Reboot
Thinking about this and other issues I've had with timeshift it may be because it is already mounted. With the stick in, reboot and it is showing as not available? On to my issue. With the stick in the USB port and the box rebooted the USB stick is not available until I pull it out and re-insert. It's not auto mounted on the reboot.
If so, open up up terminal and
df
, this is what I get:
Code: Select all
andy@T432 ~ $ df

. If so, then that is the cause of the problem, if not, then another bright idea bites the dust.Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0
