【Solved】Display Problems on Repaired HP-Envy 15t-ep000
Note: Please understand that this is my first go around and if you like to, you may see the TLDR at the bottom.
For background context:
I got an HP laptop that was given to me as a Christmas gift and I installed Linux POP_OS. Initially it was fine with a dual boot between POP_OS and Windows 10. Just after the refund window had past, the laptop had hardware issue. It was blacking out when the monitor is pivoted. So I sent it to HP for repair.
When it came back, Windows 10 worked fine and the black out was gone. However, there was a new glaring problem. POP_OS log-in and desktop showed horizontal splits (leaving only the top half functional but squished resolution) and the bottom half was reflecting the colors of the top and bleeding down in linear form. So I reinstalled POP_OS but the problem did not go away.
Called HP support again and got a suggestion to remove Windows 10 entirely and try another distribution. So I followed their advice and started distro hopping as an attempt to solve it. I switched to Linux Mint which solved the issue to some extent. But now once every 10-15 seconds it would glitch and split horizontally but it would fix itself back to full display. This has been going for a whole month. I've been considering sending the laptop to an independent repair shop. But I want to know if the issue is a hardware issue or a software issue (possibly both). Here is a YouTube link to see what the glitches look like on my end currently. https://youtu.be/t2_0asm7DOQ
TLDR;
I got an HP laptop and dual booted Windows 10 and POP_OS.
It worked until it started to black out when I pivoted the screen (hardware issue).
Sent it to HP for repair but entirely new problems made the situation worse (screen splitting, squished top part, bleeding broken bottom), making it nonfunctional.
So I switched to Linux Mint and removed Windows 10 (as per HP support advice) in an attempt to solve the issue.
Kinda worked but the glitching and flickering still shows even a month later. Need to know if it is a software issue or a hardware issue.
Device Info:
-OS: Linux Mint 20.1 x86_64
-Laptop Model: HP ENVY Laptop 15t-ep000
-DE: Cinnamon
-No DVD or CD Drive
-Storage: 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD + Intel Optane memory 32 GB
- Ram: 16 GB DDR4-2933 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-10750H (2.6 GHz, up to 5 GHz, 12 MB L3 cache, 6 cores)
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti (4 GB)
- Display: 15.6" diagonal FHD, IPS, micro-edge WLED-backlit, multitouch-enabled, edge-to-edge glass, 400 nits (1920 x 1080)
Any adivce is appreciated! Thanks and be safe.

Hello, nmssis.
Welcome aboard the Linux Mint forum.
Very nice and useful problem video, one of the few where after 11 seconds I had understood the problem clearly.
I tend to suspect a hardware issue. Yet, it is imaginable that it is the video driver in use as well.
Therefore it would helpful if you could share your full system information with us, which holds more technical details about hardware and driver software than the details, which you had mentioned.
You will find the precise steps how to share your system information with us here: How to post your Linux Mint System Information (inxi report)
Best regards,
Karl

Re: Display Problems on Repaired HP-Envy 15t-ep000
Hello, nmssis.
Maybe it is not really a hardware problem as such, but rather a missing video driver manager software.
inxi reveals that your notebook has got two different graphics chips:
The less powerful internal Intel chip i915 and the more powerful Nvidia. Precise type not displayed by inxi in this case.
The kernel loads the nouveau driver (Nvidia). But X11 does not use nouveau as well, but instead modesetting.
I suspect you may have to install the proprietary Nvidia driver, thus replacing nouveau. Use mint-drivers to check whether mint-drivers offers a proprietary NVidia driver for your machine.
I could imagine that you also need a managing software, which enables the machine to switch between Intel graphics chip and NVidia graphics chip as appropriate.
But double graphics chips is not my area of expertise, because being an underprivileged underdog only, all my machines have got only one graphics chip, either Intel or NVidia or AMD, never two of them in a single machine.
But such combinations are not uncommon. So there should be forum users around, who can advise on how to make the two work correctly.
Best regards,
Karl

With that new of a cpu, I'd recommend using the 5.8 kernel.
Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
The Intel video driver is fully installed. I do not know that installing the Nvidia driver to replace it would help the split screen issue. It might depend on how HP wired the graphics, but I'd update the kernel first to see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did the first part (switching to proprietary drivers). There seems to be lesser amount of glitches than before but it is still there. Which is greater improvement than before! As for the second part of the suggestion (to enable the machine to switch graphics), I'll await for further advice. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction!
Re: Display Problems on Repaired HP-Envy 15t-ep000
The nvidia-prime-applet for switching between Intel and Nvidia is installed by default by Mint. You should see the applet in the lower right on your panel. There have been some issues with it lately, so we really need to see if the split screen issue clears before testing the switching capabilities.

That does not look like a split screen. That looks different than what you had originally. All the icons in the panel are elongated from the middle of the screen to the bottom. Your entire screen is squished into the top half.nmssis wrote: ⤴Sat Apr 03, 2021 7:47 pmThank you for the suggestion! Re: Display Problems on Repaired HP-Envy 15t-ep000
I really think your computer should have the newer kernel, but I want you to know how to switch back to an older kernel.
You will boot into grub and then select Advanced Options. There will be a list of all the kernels installed on your system. You select one of the previous ones you installed and continue booting. You can then go into Update Manager and delete the higher number kernel.
If you do not normally see grub (which is likely since you only have Mint installed), then you would use either the shift or the escape key during system boot to get grub to show. Not all systems are the same, but it is my understanding:
-- Hold the shift key during boot to enter grub for non-EUFI/Legacy boot.
-- Hold the escape key during boot to enter grub when have EUFI boot.
If that does not get you into grub, then we can provide instructions to modify the grub file so it does show up.

What is bad is that they don't have Linux support. I've never seen where an Intel or Nvidia driver squishes the screen like that which is why I'm presuming there is something happening hardware-wise. The fact it was just glitching between a full-screen and a half-screen in the video you posted may mean there might be a way to stabilize the image.
Let's try getting the Nvidia driver to load and see if that helps. The fourth post in this thread Disappearing Nvidia drivers :Prime the prime suspect? describes a one line code fix (editing line 34) for a know bug with some of the graphics files related to Nvidia.

Re: Display Problems on Repaired HP-Envy 15t-ep000
So the driver files all appear to be there, but for some reason both nvidia and nouveau are blacklisted. Only nouveau should be blacklisted. I'm not sure what may have happened.
Do you know if there is an option in your BIOS/UEFI to be able to change the graphics? On laptops with switchable graphics there is sometimes an option for Hybrid or Switchable mode (to switch between Intel and Nvidia) and Discrete mode (Nvidia only) while other laptops have an option for Intel (integrated) or Switchable. Then there are some laptops which do not have any option listed. We would not want an Intel (integrated) only option to be selected if there is an option to change the graphics. You would want it set to Switchable or Hybrid or whatever option seems like it would let you programmatically change which graphics is being used.
I just want to make sure there is no setting in the BIOS which may be the reason for both options showing blacklisted before we make changes to the code to clear the blacklist especially since this is the first time I've seen the below in this file.
Code: Select all
Is nvidia blacklisted? yes
Is nouveau blacklisted? yes

As for the option to change the graphics in my BIOS, it appears there is no option in the BIOS.SMG wrote: ⤴Sat Apr 03, 2021 10:11 pm So the driver files all appear to be there, but for some reason both nvidia and nouveau are blacklisted. There are some laptops which are set up like that. Different manufacturers handle it differently and I did not recall what HP was doing.
I thought change line 34 would permit the Nvidia driver to show in inxi, but the bug has not always acted the same across all installs of Mint. We've not yet figured out why, so we've had to address these on a case by case basis.
If you still have the nvidia-prime-applet, switch to On-Demand mode and reboot and post the results of

. I'm hoping that will remove the blacklist on nvidia.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.
