So I've purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad E560 with an i5-6200U processor with HD Graphics 520. Its a great business class laptop for its age (its never been used either, got it for a steal) but my only complaint is the CPU usage when watching youtube videos. Watching regular 1080p movies in VLC only utilizes about 20% or so which is very reasonable but this processor for some reason doesn't handle the codecs youtube uses very well and will immediately jump up to 80%-90% utilization......which is unacceptable lol. Does anyone know any good tricks to get better performance out of this chip? Ive grabbed a chrome addon called enhanced-h264ify but it doesn't seem to help much. Thoughts?

I have the capability to do that but no that doesnt work for me. I need to video surf lots at work to find info i need.
Or I could wait for someone to show up in this thread with some real knowledge of browser codecs.
That is a very excellent way of not getting help at all...Insulting one of the more knowledgeable in Linux that is among us is a sure fire way for the rest of us to back off...Have fun...DAMIEN
You're running Cinnamon, which is more demanding of CPU power than some other desktop environments. Consider Mint Xfce, which is comparatively lighter, so it's better suited for older PCs. (In Cinnamon, under Effects, disable some/all of the graphical effects, to lighten the workload.)

I was not trying to be insulting but I have zero patience for people who comment on peoples threads with no helpful information and are essentially just trying to up their post count by spouting gibberish like "Tell your boss to give you a better computer". Also Linux has been my daily driver for about 15 years now and I am well versed on how to effectively go about getting help when needed. If your looking to flex kid, do it to someone who wont embarrass you in the end. I was cutting my teeth in Linux Mint when people like Ikey Doherty were just coming to prominence, and I can promise I've contributed more back the community than you have. Have a nice day.

Be prepared to accept that your PC simply isn't up for the task.
Thanks for the reply. I did actually switch over to XFCE to compare performance and I've got all the appropriate codecs installed, but its youtubes codecs dont seem to like HD Graphics 520, especially AV1 and VP8+9. Other streaming sites run just fine at about 30-50 percent utilization but youtube just shits the bed at 89-90 percent. I do use FreeTube from Flathub as a standalone replacement which works ok, but I'd still like to see if I can get this to play nicely in the browser. Thanks for the input though, much appreciated.

Let's be clear. You got two valid responses from me. You didn't like the first, but the responsibility for that is entirely on you because you were not up-front with what kind of solution you were looking for; all you asked for was 'tricks'. As for the second, which you also didn't like, nobody other than you is responsible for your outrageously overblown expectations of your cheap, slow and incapable hardware.
I am well versed on how to effectively go about getting help when needed.
Like omitting key requirements and key information then blaming someone else when you get told something you don't want to be told but never mentioned it the first time around.
do it to someone who wont embarrass you in the end

QED
There was nothing wrong with your first post, it was a valid suggestion and was appreciated. Like I said though, it doesn't work for my situation since I need to video surf to find info I need to do my job and having to download every video to see it's money just isn't practical. That wasn't an attack on you it was just a statement of fact. Your second post though wasn't helpful at all, and tbh posts like that might deter other people from helping out because it reads like a dead end. Like 'its hopeless just get a better computer'. That's why I said I'd rather keep this going and see if someone who is knowledgeable on this situation might have something to contribute.
Also I seemed to have solved the issue on my own when I turned off window effects. Dropped the CPU usage back down to 30% like other streaming sites were already performing. Now if someone has this issue in the future and they read this, it may help them as well. You give up to easily dude..... if your gassed out don't care anymore after your thousands of posts maybe you should take a break from the community.
Also its pathetic to be a grammar <violates forum rules>, be better than that.
