Installing HP Office Jet Pro 6968 (6960) <SOLVED>

Post by loybanks »

Having troublesome time getting my subject printer installed on WIFI system. Have HPLIP installed but so far cannot determine how to go about installing. Some many months ago I think I had it installed. But believe one of the updates uninstalled whether I wanted to or not.

So would appreciate someone guiding me down the right path here. Thanks so much. Loy Banks

Maybe this will help:
First, you must connect the printer to your WiFi connection via the printer's menu, so LM will see your printer.

1. Download HPLIP
HP All-in-One Printers - Driver Support for Linux OS
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01174360

Installer Walkthrough:

2. Latest version of HPLIP:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... nstalltree

3. HPLIP Information:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... /downloads

Good luck.

Install the hp-plugin:
sudo aptitude install hp-plugin

Install the HP GUI which is a nice HP fronted for CUPS and allows things like ink level and test pages, etc.:
sudo aptitude install hplip-gui

If all else fails:

HP Printer Setup in Linux

1. Update Python:
sudo apt-get install python

2. Install/Update CUPS:
sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

3. HPLIP Drivers - Remove and Reinstall
First, open a Terminal and do the following, one at a time:
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge hplip
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install hplip
OR
IMPORTANT: (install hplip from HP's website, according to the version of Python on your system - SEE BELOW).

Manually install HPLIP (the latest version, based on what version of Python is on your system).
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip

3.A. If your python version is 2.6 or greater, please download this Download Tarball.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ ... irror=nchc

To run the installer manually, right-click on the download file, then click on "Extract Here".
Change into the 3.17.10 directory (or the download directory) and run:
hplip-install.

Or

3.B. If Python version is 2.5 or less, please download this HPLIP tarball.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/
then download an older version of HPLIP.

To run the installer manually, right-click on the download file, then click on "Extract Here".
Change into the 3.17.10_py2.5 directory (or the download directory) and run:
hplip-install.

4. HPLIP Binary Plug-In
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... lugin.html

Most Linux distributions include HPLIP with their software, but most do not include the plug-in. Therefore, it is a safe practice to run a utility called "hp-setup", which, will install the printer into the CUPS spooler, download, and install the plug-in at the appropriate time.

4.A. To install the HPLIP Binary Plug-In using the GUI, you can follow these procedures:
1. Launch a command-line window and enter:
hp-setup

2. Select your connection type and click "Next".

3. Select your printer from "Selected Devices" list and click "Next".

4. Enter your root password when prompted and click "Next".

5. Use the recommended installation method and click "Next".

6. Check the box to accept with the "Driver Plug-In License Agreement" and click "Next".

7. Finish the installation of the printer as normal, however you may be prompted to re-enter your user name and password.

4.B. Install the HPLIP Binary Plug-In components manually, a utility exists (hp-plugin) which will download and install the plugin file, but it does not also install a printer queue like hp-setup does.

Do the following:
1. Launch a command-line window and enter:
hp-plugin

2. Follow the directions above for navigating the GUI but remember that the printer que will not be installed through this process.

*Note: you may need to run hp-plugin as root or super user depending on your distro.

5. Install HPLIP Toolbox (hplip-gui)
Installing HPLIP Toolbox is sometimes necessary to get your HP printer or scanner up and running by launching a terminal window and enter:
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

6. Install HP Printer Postscript Drivers
In Software Manager, are the HP Printer Postscript drivers installed?
Printer-driver-postscript-hp
If so, it will have a green check on the icon.
If not, install it via Software Manager
OR
via the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install printer-driver-postscript-hp

7. Reboot.

8. Run HP Check:
hp-check

9. Run HP Setup:
hp-setup

10. Go to Menu/Administration/Printers.
a. The CUPS "PDF" printer should be listed.
Double-click the "PDF" icon.
Under "Device URI", "cups-pdf:/" or similar should be shown.
Click OK to close.
If the CUPS Server is blank, then CUPS needs to be uninstalled/reinstalled.
b. Double-click the "Printer" icon.
Under "Device URI", "dnssd://Printer_Model._printer._tcp.local/" or similar should be shown.
Click OK to close.
If Printer Properties localhost via USB or WiFi is blank, uninstall/reinstall the HPLIP drivers AFTER installing CUPS.

11. Go to Menu/Administration/Printers.
If your printer is not listed: (this is AFTER you install CUPS, the HPLIP drivers, etc.):
Click the "Add" icon.
Click "Network printer".
Your printer should be listed shortly.
If not, click "Find network printer".

You may have to enter the Printer settings on the printer itself and let it find your wifi connection, and setup the ethernet/wifi settings there.

loy@loy-23se-d394:~$ sudo aptitude install hplip-gui
