Volumen control shows Analog Stereo (unavailable) but works if selected

Post by joseccz »

I have a modern Intel NUC BXNUC10I7FNH1 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10710U with Linux Mint 20.01. I have its "stereo" port plugged to my speakers. Yet, The Volumen control (pulse audio) shows "Analog Stereo (unavailable)" but works if selected. However if I reboot the system I need to select this option again and again. Is there a way to correct this?

Hi joseccz,

We probably cannot correct the (unavailable) part of the issue, but we can work around it. Paste the output of pacmd list-sinks with working sound along with pacmd list-cards with non working sound.

My NUC has only one sound card. I posted the results for my unique sound card.

The next results are when the sound card works i.e. profile = "Analog Stereo Duplex (Unavailable)":

If I reboot the system defaults to this "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output" profile and I have to set the "Analog Stereo Duplex (Unavailable)" profile manually again using the Pulse Audio Configuration tab. This can not be done using the GNome Settings.

Thanks

Re: Volumen control shows Analog Stereo (unavailable) but works if selected

Post by MrEen »

You have either no jack detection on your output port, or reverse jack detection:
ports:
analog-input-internal-mic: Internal Microphone (priority 8900, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
properties:
device.icon_name = "audio-input-microphone"
analog-output-headphones: Headphones (priority 9900, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
properties:
device.icon_name = "audio-headphones"
hdmi-output-0: HDMI / DisplayPort (priority 5900, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)
properties:
device.icon_name = "video-display"
device.product.name = "U28E590"
Because of that, the system is defaulting to the HDMI output.

To test if this is reverse jack detection install alsa-tools then run this command twice, once with the speakers connected and once without:

Code: Select all

sudo hdajacksensetest -a
Paste both outputs then we'll know what the jack detection issue is.

Re: Volumen control shows Analog Stereo (unavailable) but works if selected

Post by MrEen »

Okay, so it's reverse jack detection! It's been quite a while since I've seen that.

Hopefully this will fix it:

Install alsa-tools-gui so you can run hdajackretask and when it opens check the Parser hints box then double click on inv_jack_detect until it says yes. Then click on Install boot override. Now reboot and see if the issue is solved.

EDIT: Oh dammit! I could have sworn I saw no in the first output where yes is showing! Ignore the above.
Let's get a look at your sound setup with this command:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line of output will have a URL pointing to the info. Pasting that URL is all I need.

Here it is the link:

https://termbin.com/n26j

The Jack retasking for HDA Intel sound cards shows Codecs:

Intel Kabylake HDMI
Realtek ALC256

Which one should it be applied to the inv_jack_detect?

Update: I just noticed that My NUC BXNUC10I7FNH1 has only one 3.5mm audio port for both Headphone/Microphone.

However, I have been directly plugging the headphone without any Y-adapter for headphone/mic. I just purchased one adapter

and I hope this will solve the problem.

Thanks

[SOLVED] Unfortunately, even with the splitter the OS can not detect the headphone is plugged. So, this problem continues... Why not give preference to the USER selected output instead of making it automatic at every boot? Note: The next settings are working while using the splitter.

I ended using the hdajackretask using the next settings:
