Suggested motherboards for Linux Mint

Post by eliotalanis »

Hi everyone, I'm a Fedora user willing to switch to LinuxMint, but my current computer is so outdated. Would anyone please suggest me some Mint compatible motherboards? Thank you very much

ASrock with intel chipset has worked over many years for me, with dozens of builds.

Notice I said intel chipset. I can't speak for AMD problems, but I had issues with one I tried. It was a ASRock Mini-ITX Motherboard (B450 Gaming-ITX/AC)
Even then you avoid the Dragon Ethernet

They may work fine on Intel chip sets.

After contacting their support myself, and reading their support forums, I would not recommend their products.

So in your opinion what motherboard has the best phone support and is also best for Linux? No major company I know of will even discuss Linux on their boards.

Good to know.
It appears ASUS is at least not unfriendly:

Gigabyte certainly do.

I used to use Gigabyte circa AM3, but calling them, you get (or used to) low level techs that really didn't help much. Getting advanced tech was almost impossible. They are good boards though.

I just checked with my ASrock Z490M and the Dragon Ethernet is still not supported. This is with Mint 20.1 installed with the Edge iso and all updates. It is my daily machine. Luckily it has dual Ethernet ports and the other is an intel. Everything else works splendidly. Bluetooth, wireless, everything. If it had just the Dragon, I'd have gotten a USB Ethernet adapter for less then $20 on Amazon.

Not to beat a dead horse, but here's the culprit.

Kernel 5.8 supports the r8125 chipset via the r8169 driver.

Code: Select all

boot@semerkhet:~$ inxi -N
Network: Device-1: Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE driver: r8169
           Device-2: Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE driver: r8169
Device-3: ASIX AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet type: USB driver: ax88179_178a

boot@semerkhet:~$ uname -a
Linux semerkhet 5.8.0-50-lowlatency #56~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 13 01:48:06 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I don't see why you have an issue, but perhaps it's a slightly different chipset (r8125BG).

Edit: Try kernel 5.10-oem.

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04b

Yes it's working, but being as I have dual and don't need it, I'll disable it again in the BIOS. Still good to know there is a workaround.

Code: Select all

lance@Z8:~$ uname -r
5.10.0-1022-oem
lance@Z8:~$
I'll timeshift back to 5.8

I thought it would. I watch the GNU/Linux kernel changelogs and saw that the driver didn't make 5.9 but it did get into mainline 5.10.

Built two machines with Asus B450F Gaming. No issues with onboard sound and ethernet, and M.2 socket. CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with integrated graphics, attached through the mobo's Display Port outlet. The Gaming-II should also work and has better VRMs in case you want some more power-hungry CPU, like the 105W class.

Keep in mind that regardless of which mobo, you ideally use exactly two identical RAM bars. Only one is too few because that would be single channel operation, which costs performance. Four RAM bars however may not work at their full speed.
