Asus Prime B550M-K motherboard & Ryzen 4650G

Post by Bfuddled2Day »

Hi,

I need some advice from anyone who has experience of the ASUS Prime B550M-K mother board fitted with a 6-Core AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G. I bought a computer fitted with this motherboard and assumed that running Linux would not be a problem and so I installed Cinnamon V19.3 and subsequent upgrades. However, there are issues and while investigating on the ASUS website found at the bottom of the Prime B550M-K specification the statement “Operating System Windows® 10 64-bit”.

So is a fully functional Linux system possible with this motherboard?

So far I’ve not had any help from ASUS as I do not have a serial number for the board as I have not opened the computer case.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, but with that processor you need kernel 5.8. I can't say if it's in the LM 19 repos but it's in LM20.

Thank you kadaitcha man,

I will update to V20 - I had put this off as I did not know if it was worth carrying on but now it is.

I have installed LM 20.1, however, ...

scratch@scratch-990071:~$ inxi
CPU: 6-Core AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G with Radeon Graphics (-MT MCP-)
speed/min/max: 1408/1400/3700 MHz Kernel: 5.4.0-72-generic x86_64 Up: 6m
Mem: 1337.5/15403.5 MiB (8.7%) Storage: 223.57 GiB (7.1% used) Procs: 258
Shell: bash 5.0.17 inxi: 3.0.38
With LM19.3 installed the Kernel details were:
5.4.0-71-generic x86_64
Not 5.8 or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Thanks,
rene

No, 5.4 is the default series, but 5.8 is installable from the Update Manager (the shield thing in your tray) -> View -> Linux kernels.

Hi Rene, thanks for that advice. I have updated the Kernel to 5.8.0-50 and after a quick look most things seem OK. The display is the main problem, the picture bleeds off the edge of the screen and the display utility will not let me change anything. Finding the update icon was like playing battleships!
FYI LM19 and my monitor worked fine with different hardware, however I think my question has been answered - thanks everybody.
I will chase up the other issues with more specific posts.
