I am two days on LMDE4 and the first trouble shows up: I have installed Cheese and it doesn't recognise the in-built webcam nor the microphone. The camera also is dead in Zoom; it worked well in Windows 10 Pro as well as other distro's (can't remember which, though, as I had tested several.)

Have you tried other kernels? 4.19.0-16-amd64 sounds old to me, but your machine may need old. Maybe even older??

I was told in these forums that LMDE4 cannot be updated to other kernels. The webcam did work in Manjaro but then the graphics card didn't. The BIOS is from October 2014, if I remember correctly. All worked perfectly in Windows 10 Pro.
I am disabled and on a puny government grant, which is rather an insult than a lifeline, so I cannot upgrade my laptop hardware-wise.

Yeah, that is only partially correct. I'm not sure I would try these steps.I was told in these forums that LMDE4 cannot be updated to other kernels.
