SSD error "failed command: READ DMA" (S.M.A.R.T. ok)

Post by Pete77 »

Hello,
I have an Samsung SSD 830 which reports errors when attaching to the system:

Code: Select all

[ 3723.017906] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133
[ 3723.017923] ata4: EH complete
[ 3723.048574] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0

[ 3723.048586] ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA
[ 3723.048597] ata4.00: cmd c8/00:08:00:c2:e7/00:00:00:00:00/ee tag 3 dma 4096 in

[ 3723.048602] ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
[ 3723.048606] ata4.00: error: { ABRT }
The first guess was that the SSD has errros, but smart values seem to be ok:

Code: Select all

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-5.4.0-72-generic] (local build)

Given that I didn't quickly find information about firmware versions for the 830 I earlier thought I'd leave this for someone else but given that there is no reply up to now: have you checked to see if you're on the newest firmware? Samsung seems to for some drives offer e.g. downloadable ISOs with the update software but normally it is/was a matter of installing the newest version of Samsung's Magician software on a Windows system. I'm almost positive that "Magician" will have by now gone through 16 rounds of senseless renaming and/or dumping of support for older hardware --- but I'm not going to check so I hope you manage to figure those bits out :)

Thank for your suggestion. My current firmware is CXM03B1Q, which is also the newest one.

OK. Seemed like the kind of thing a firmware update would help with. Don't know then.
