[SOLVED] best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
Hi all
I have NO skills when it comes to graphics and so I am a little stumped. I was under the impression I should get 3840*2160 @60hz using HDMI 1.4 .
I plugged the Phillips SWV9200F/27 into the mini display port ( left hand side just below the dock connector) and the LG supplied cable into the LG 49wl95c-we HDMI 1.
Is this the right way to do this because the window is flattened.
I have most cables and a onelinkPro DU903351 dock.
I just want to get my 3840 * 2160 @ 60hz with sound through the monitor speaker PLEASE HELP!!!

Have you checked your ccomputer's specs to see if the computer can output that through the port you are using?sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 7:14 pmI have NO skills when it comes to graphics and so I am a little stumped. I was under the impression I should get 3840*2160 @60hz using HDMI 1.4 .
You plugged it into a dock or you plugged it into a computer?sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 7:14 pmI plugged the Phillips SWV9200F/27 into the mini display port ( left hand side just below the dock connector) and the LG supplied cable into the LG 49wl95c-we HDMI 1.

Hi Smg
thank you so much for trying to help me.
Yes I have checked my computer specs from this link
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/prod ... s/pd100511
here is what I found.
Video chipsets:
Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor.
Max resolution: 3840x2160 (Mini DisplayPort)@60Hz; 4096x2304 (HDMI)@24Hz
I plugged it into the dock via the displayport and go nothing.
I plugged it directly into the laptop hdmi and hdmi 2 on the screen and got the distorted compressed 3180 # 2160 (16:9) @ 30hz vsync
thank you so much for trying to hlp me on this. I am new to mint and need all the help I can get.
here is the output from inxi -Fxxxrz you requested.

I put the specs so there is one on each line so you can see there are different capabilities depending upon which port is used. If you want to get the 3840*2160 @60hz you put in your first post, you will have to use mini display port.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 9:28 pm Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor.
Max resolution:
3840x2160 (Mini DisplayPort)@60Hz;
4096x2304 (HDMI)@24Hz
The HDMI resolution you want is slightly less than the maximum the laptop can do which means you will probably be able to get a slightly higher frequency than 24Hz. In fact, that is what you found to be true:
sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 9:28 pmI plugged it directly into the laptop hdmi and hdmi 2 on the screen and got the distorted compressed 3180 # 2160 (16:9) @ 30hz vsync
It is possible a driver is needed for the docking hardware in order to get graphics using it. We would need to know more about the dock to know if that is the case.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 9:28 pm I plugged it into the dock via the displayport and go nothing.
As an FYI: The latest BIOS/UEFI available for your laptop is version 1.32. I do not know that would help with this issue, but I did notice multiple updates to the CPU microcode in the Release Notes. That would not help you get a higher frequency, but it may help produce a better display at 30Hz.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
thank you so much SMG
can I ask a naive question, what effect does the frequency have on the display?
I'll check out the displayport to displayport approach on the docking station.
Here is the full layout
Monitor : LG 49wl95c-we
laptop : lenovo x1 carbon gen 3 20bt-s29b00
docking station : lenovo onelink Pro DU903351
I will also look into the bios upgrade which is a good spot as I completely forgot about that.
thank you for taking the time. I REALLY want to see what this new display is capable of.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
The frequency is how often the screen is redrawn. Usually, a higher frequency means a clearer image.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 10:40 pmcan I ask a naive question, what effect does the frequency have on the display?
I was not able to tell for sure whether or not this docking station requires a driver to work properly. If this is the correct dock, there is a driver showing as needed for Windows. Some docks need a driver in Linux-based distros and others do not. The only third-party driver of which I am aware for Linux-based distros is the DisplayLink driver, but I do not know if that is appropriate for your situation.
If you can get an image, then you do not need any drivers for the dock.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Fri May 07, 2021 10:40 pm I'll check out the displayport to displayport approach on the docking station.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
Hi SMG
again thank you so much for persisting with this. Based on your observation about the docking port ( yes you have the right one) I dug around looking for drivers, firmware upgrades ANYTHING! All I found was what you did. Nothing but Windows as far as the eye can see.
LG put a displayport to displayport cable in the box with the tv marked 5K but attaching from the displayport on the docking station to the displayport on the monitor results in a black screen.
I took your advice and plugged a Phillips SWV9200F/27 minidisplay port to HDMI ( they claim HDMI 2.0 support) connected to the monitor HDMI 1 port and getting the resolution below BUT I could get 3840 * 2160 ( 16:9) @ 30hz ( thank you for the explanation of the effect of hz by the way) but that gets me a flattened distorted image. I wonder if getting another minidisplay port adapter purely for displayport to displayport connection ( no hdmi) would be better?
thank you again for persisting with this. I am completely clusless when it comes to this stuff.

That sounds like a driver for the dock might be needed since you were able to get a display on it when you hooked it directly to the laptop.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 1:20 pmLG put a displayport to displayport cable in the box with the tv marked 5K but attaching from the displayport on the docking station to the displayport on the monitor results in a black screen.

xrandr --verbose
. The output should give an indication of what is possible. I do not have an ultrawide monitor, but I've heard others say that sometimes one has to set up custom resolutions for it to be able to get the full capability. I do not know.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 1:20 pmI wonder if getting another minidisplay port adapter purely for displayport to displayport connection ( no hdmi) would be better?
Maybe someone with more monitor experience would be able to provide some input.

thank you so much for all your help and guidance. I have learnt a few more commands that will help me and you have given me a new path to follow with the customize idea. Seems like a plan. Thanks again. Here's the output from my xrandr --verbose should anyone tred this path in the future.

In your xrandr output, the laptop screen does show a preferred and current, but I only noticed a current designation for the HDMI connection. I would guess that means the preferred resolution was not picked up. Maybe that is where a custom resolution might be needed? Not completely sure. This thread New kernel doesn't recognize monitor SOLVED is solution where the monitor was not recognized at all, but maybe a similar solution might help you.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
Hi SMG
thank you once again for persisting with this. I am currently doing the following:
1 have ordered a mini display port to display port cable to see if that makes a difference, it will support 8k
2 going through the docs on xrandr to understand what it does using your GREAT advice.
3 trying to make sense of the xrandr output. Right now it makes NO sense to me but.
I am connected with a mini displayport adapter to a hdmi cable to a hdmi port in the tv at 3840*1080 @50hz but the xrandr output says
I'll go through the link you sent me and thanks for that. You have been so kind trying to help me and I do appreciate it. Please have an excellent weekend and IF ( big IF) I get any more progress on this I will be sure to post it. I feel bad taking up so much of your time.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
eDP-1 is your laptop display and not the external display.sandbagger wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 3:55 pmI am connected with a mini displayport adapter to a hdmi cable to a hdmi port in the tv at 3840*1080 @50hz but the xrandr output says

If you go down the list, you'll see there is another "connected" in addition to the eDP-1.
You can run
xrandr
(without the --verbose) to get a more concise listing of your connections. It should be easier to see which ones are connected when you run that.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
you see, if I had brain I'd be dangerous YEP got it now with the xrandr no verbose. Matches what I am seeing completely. Just working through how to set up custom resolutions. Thanks again.

Re: best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
Solved it thanks to SMG
Got the cable below plugged it into the lenovo x1 carbon gen 3 20bt-s29b00 and then directly into the displayport of the LG 49wl95c-we and got the max resolution of 5120 * 1440 @ 60hz. It's a fresh linux mint 20.1 install with NO modifications to the graphics settings.
thank you so much SMG for all your guidance, I have learnt a LOT!!!

Re: [SOLVED] best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
without you I wouldn't have known a single thing about how to examine how graphics work in Linux. thanks so much for taking the time. I have made the mod to the initial post title. Thanks again SMG, you are what makes the net great.
Re: [SOLVED] best way to attach to a LG 49wl95c-we
You got lucky While I like my LG ultrawide, I wouldn't buy another one. Since LM19 I've had to manually set the resolution with xrandr and we've had a number of posts from other LG owners who had a lot more problems than I did getting them to work with linux at their native resolution.
