System freeze while playing Video and browsing in linuxmint 20.1

Post by mihirmishra »

At first video freezes, cursor and other function of the media player works and if I try to open other applications everything works, just the media player refuses to close. And after a minute or so system completely freezes.

It started happening since yesterday when I was watching videos on VLC. System froze 3 times and I had to cut the power supply to shut down my PC. I am not sure if it's happening just because of video or there is any other issue. Till now all the 4 times my system froze when I was watching video lectures. I changed my media player so to mpv and smplayer so it's not a vlc issue.

Recent Hardware Changes I made: Removed my old Harddisk.

Hardware details (open it with libreoffice writer):
[Hardware.html].zip
(6.42 KiB) Downloaded 32 times

Here are system logs after reboot of last freeze and second last freeze: Image

Last time when I was facing system freeze issue about 6-7 months ago, it was when I added another RAM slot to increase my RAM from 2GB to 4GB. But my system showed that only 3.16GB RAM is available. Just after adding the RAM my system started freezing after half an hour of use, and that time gradually reduced with every freeze. The issue solved when I ran my system with only 2GB RAM installed.

Reason for previous system freeze is still unknown. Link to previous hardware freeze discussion: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=347268

Edit: Now sometimes it isn't freezing while playing Videos but now it started freezing even while browsing the internet. I was browsing Nas Academy while system froze.

This sounds like a hardware issue. Something on your motherboard or RAM is dying. You would have to test your hardware parts one by one with known good hardware.

I looked at the previous discussion you linked, the hardware seems somewhat weak to run current OSes (dual core Pentium, only 2GB RAM, integrated Intel graphics, spinning hard drive 80% full...) I guess you are using XFCE. Freeze can happen when you run out of RAM. Do you have Swap? sudo swapon -s then sudo free.

The hardware info you provided is a bit cumbersome and difficult to read (I don't have LibreOffice for example). Could you provide it in a more suitable format (as explained below)? I looked at the previous discussion you linked, but it's missing Memory, and it would be nice to have it here (since it sounds like you had hardware changes).

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply
and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the
command between the code markers like this:
Results
.

EDIT: I forgot to mention. The 3.16GB RAM is probably because of the integrated graphics reserving some of the System RAM for video memory.

An underpowered computer freezing when playing a video is not a rare occurrence. Start System Monitor - Resources tab. What is the size of your swap? Do you have a swap partition or a swap file? How large is it?

Please type this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Post the output in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>
Perhaps that zip file contains this information??

RAM is new, so it can't be it. Some people suggested that I received a faulty RAM, so I replaced it. That rules out the faulty RAM.
EDIT: I forgot to mention. The 3.16GB RAM is probably because of the integrated graphics reserving some of the System RAM for video memory.
Yes some people mentioned that and asked me to check it from bios and No, 840MB of RAM was not allotted for the graphics.
since it sounds like you had hardware changes
I had Mint installed on a 240GB SSD and had an old 500GB HDD. HDD was completely empty. And the Hardware changes were only the removal of that empty HDD.
I have 4GB allotted to swap.
I checked that from HTOP while running that video, and when the video froze it was only consuming 730MB RAM out of 2GB, so I don't thing system freeze is due to low RAM. I used to watch a lot of video and this never happened before.

I have 4GB allotted to swap and 0kb of swap was being used during that time (should I run sudo swapon -s and sudo free?).

Does you video freeze when playing with Celluloid and mpv Media Player, too? If not, the problem is with VLC. If yes, your machine.

I've mentioned that in second para, that I tried other media players too.

I have the exact same system freeze on 20.1. freeze doesn't happen straight away but after the pc's been on for a while. I use Celluloid as main player but it noticed it does with VLC aswell. tried the latest kernel 5.8.0-50 but didn't help
