<Solved>Installation on Dell Inspiron 24 5000 All-In-One
Can anyone give me an opinion on whether I could successfully run Mint on the Dell Inspiron 24 5000 AIO (All-In-One) systems.
I'm aware that Dell sell some of their systems with Ubuntu but this is not one of them.
Alternatively, I'd be interested to hear about anyone successfully running Mint on any AIO system. i.e. HP, Lenovo, Acer etc.

Hi photojohn, yes, Mint should run well on that system, and really on any desktop or laptop that comes with Windows pre-installed. I've been running Mint on two or three Dell computers; different ones from the one you're considering, but there is, as far as I can see, nothing particularly novel or rare in the hardware of your "all-in-one" system (which is just a desktop with peripherals, after all) that should cause problems for any Linux distribution.

Hi gogolink, thank you for the reply.
That gives me more confidence.

Thanks @wallyUSA. Does your Dell XPS use touch screen?

No!
EDIT: I do use an external monitor and mic/cam and use Zoom to teach

I run Mint on three different models of Dell laptops, all have touchscreens. No problems.
The Inspiron 24 5000 All-in-One Setup and Specifications page on the Dell support site includes information on how to install Ubuntu on your particular model, with a link to their tips for How to Install Ubuntu Linux on your Dell PC. That guidance can also apply to Mint.

Thank you @hglee. That's good information. I'll check it out in detail.
Re: <SOLVED>Installation on Dell Inspiron 24 5000 All-In-One
Thanks for everyone’s input on this. I’ve bought a Dell Inspiron 5040 AIO and today installed Ubuntu 20.04.
Everything running well except the sound. There’s no sound output. I see that this appears to be a common problem with Ubuntu and Mint on some systems. I’ve tried a few things but so far no success.
It’s not a showstopper for me but I’d still like to get it working.

@photojohn Did you get the sound working on your Dell?
Re: <Solved>Installation on Dell Inspiron 24 5000 All-In-One
Hi @bloodorange
Yes.
What I've done is install Pulse Audio Volume Control.
After the system starts the Profile in the "Configuration" tab is set to one of the HDMI options. I change that to "Analogue Stereo Output" and set the Port in the "Output Devices" tab to "Line Out (unplugged)" or "Headphones (unplugged)".
As a shortcut to the above I created a "Desklet" with the following code. All I do then is simply click the desklet launcher and it runs the following pactl command:
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Set audio output
Exec=/usr/bin/pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo
Comment=Set audio to analogue output
Terminal=false
Icon=cinnamon-panel-launcher
Type=Application
