Syntek Webcam

Post by ras900 »

Hello.

Recently I brought an old laptop back to life and Linux Mint was my OS choice to do so. Main use is online classes/text processing/web browsing. Everything is going great so far, I'm using it right now with great joy.
However, configuring the webcam is proven to be difficult to my beginner skills.
I cannot compile the driver, and the camera doesn't show on cheese, web browsers or microsoft teams. VLC recognizes the device, bur is hit or miss (mostly miss). guvcview saves black video.

Here is what I did so far:
Running latest linux mint, fully updated.

lsusb returns:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 174f:6a31 Syntek Web Cam - Asus A8J, F3S, F5R, VX2S, V1S

Downloaded the driver:
http://syntekdriver.sourceforge.net/
Downloaded version 1.4.0 and 2.1.0 from sourceforge (following the download section on the same site).

Followed instructions from around the web, trying to compile, install and load the driver, but many errors appear one after another.
Installed some libraries, downloaded tweaked makefile-syntekdriver, copied files from different version... to no avail. I cannot even compile it.
Seems like the driver was built for an old kernel version.

Please instruct me on how to solve the problem.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Someone posted the option to try to use ndiswrapper, but the post was deleted.
Anyway, I sucessfully loaded the windows driver, it appeared on ndisgtk.
However, the camera still didn't appear on cheese, browsers or microsoft teams.

It would be appreciated if anyone can shed a light on this issue.

Sorry, but if guvcview and Cheese do not see it, then it looks bad.
