Newbie trying to get started on a 2011 15" macbook pro with the same issue . Never used linux before, trying to save the computer like OP, which brings me here.
Do I need to follow the OP comments about firmware commands or only follow the later instructions from the thread?

If you are able to do that, I would do it. If you figure out how to do that, let us all know.I used a firmware command to turn off the card and then deleted all AMD 'kexts' (drivers)

This worked. Didn't bother with the "permanent method".
I've used this on a dozen machines with bad video cards.
Good luck!

I have got windows 10 running on the mac now (have linux mint 20 in a virtual machine, going to try and make sure it works before switching over to it completely), and radeon drivers disabled, and automatic updates disabled. Would I still need/be able to follow the commands in rumples link?
