Thinkpad T480 Overactive Fan & Hot Temperatures [Solved]

Post by Kendoori »

Purely experience share....

The fan on my T480 (running Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon with 5.8 Kernel) felt completely overactive. I have TLP installed, also thinkfan, but neither seemed to have much impact on the fan. Frustrated, I used some compressed air to blow out the vents but also discovered this: https://github.com/erpalma/throttled

I did the cardinal sin of doing the compressed air and the installation of the Throttled fix at the same time, but the positive impact has been significant (not much came out of the vents with the air, so I think the Throttled fix was the cure). Temperatures have dropped 40 degrees plus and the machine is significantly quieter because of it. Prior to the fix, the fan was on at high speed a lot of the time with associated noise.
