DPM wrote: Sun Jun 20, 2021 7:25 pmThat's what I don't think. In fact, even the 5.4 kernel does boot up properly with my 4700U Renoir laptop.
I presume someone would want graphics drivers when the kernel boots. Renoir graphics drivers are not in the 5.4 kernel. One needs at least the 5.7.1 kernel in order to get Renoir graphics drivers. Anything prior to that kernel will be booting in software rendering mode for graphics and there will be an N/A for the graphics device driver. That means Cinnamon will be throwing the no hardware acceleration error and external monitors are likely to be blank. Those are common reasons people with Renoir APUs have posted on this forum and had their problems resolved by installing the 5.8 kernel.

I installed Ubuntu 21.04 Mate - it has 5.11 kernel. It updates and reboots fine and the sound works. It's not Mint though. It would be nice if Mint could put the 5.11 kernel in a Edge 20.02 version. I believe this is Wayland so it may not be possible.

Wanted to let you know my Update Manager is now showing 5.11.0-22 kernel available in Update Manager. That means you can install it in LM20.1 (or LM20.2 beta) now.

To install the kernel from Update Manager. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel (Only the one option is showing on my computer tonight). An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Ok, thanks I planned on putting Mint on it eventually. Ubuntu was giving me a message that it was detecting a problem, and the performance of the system was terrible, so there was definitely something wrong. Hopefully AMD drivers are not having performance issues.

(Nearly Solved)Re: OEM Hp 5700g and chipset drivers ???

Post by Qurcus »

I got Edge installed. It boots successfully after new kernel 5.11 and update is completed.

The only update order that i found which works is;
1) Install Edge and reboot
2) install 5.11 kernel from update manager (do not reboot)
3) refresh update manager - uncheck old kernel from manager (5.8 ) - uncheck intel drivers
4) update everything else
5) reboot

The sound works now.
There are 2 problems though;
1) I have a 4k 60 hz monitor but the display recommends 3840 x 2160 at 30 hz VSync
- I'm displaying the screen at 1440 to get 59.95 hz
2) If i play 4k YouTube video at 4k 60 hz I get stuttering and tons of dropped frames on the "stats for nerds" (This does not happen with Windows 10)
- I tried setting display on 1080p and 1440p with YouTube video set at 4k resolution but still have dropped frames

Is this because Linux drivers still need work ?

The system will automatically reboot to the highest number kernel. Because at this point you had not yet rebooted to load the 5.11 kernel, Update Manager was giving you the information for the (at that time) currently installed 5.8 kernel.

Intel drivers for what? Do you maybe mean Intel microcode update?

There are multiple factors which can affect this type of issue: graphic drivers, computer port's capability, the cable used, and the monitor. I would suspect the two issues you have listed may be related, but they might not.

Please supply a current inxi -Fxxxrz and also the output of xrandr --verbose

Re: (Nearly Solved) OEM Hp 5700g and chipset drivers ???

Post by Qurcus »

I'm currently running with a single stick of RAM. I placed a order so i can run duel channel so that should fix the problem - it's just not here yet. Windows 10 can run 4k 60hz in single channel but apparently Linux can not. If you don't see anything wrong it's prolly just a RAM issue.

Based on what I've seen in other threads, I would guess it is not a RAM issue. Others have also seen similar issues, but often if it is possible on Windows then it can be done in Mint, but manual adjustments are normally needed.

The xrandr information lists the 3840x2160@30 as the preferred and the 2560x1440@60 as the current. I do not see the first option listed as available @60 so apparently the system is not automatically picking that up.

Code: Select all

  3840x2160 (0x56) 297.000MHz +HSync +VSync +preferred
        h: width 3840 start 4016 end 4104 total 4400 skew 0 clock 67.50KHz
        v: height 2160 start 2168 end 2178 total 2250 clock 30.00Hz

  2560x1440 (0x5f) 241.500MHz +HSync -VSync *current
        h: width 2560 start 2608 end 2640 total 2720 skew 0 clock 88.79KHz
        v: height 1440 start 1443 end 1448 total 1481 clock 59.95Hz
Sometimes it is necessary to manually add monitor options, but one other place to check to see what is being picked up by the drivers (to make sure there are not any obvious issues to be addressed) is the Xorg log file. Use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

I have duel channel Ram now and performance has dramatically improved. There was also a firmware update for AMD. Gaming is flawless at 60 hz. seems to match what they can do with Windows 10 gaming. I can view 4k YouTube videos at 30 hz with no dropped frames but not 60 hz. At 60 hz the best i can get is 1440p with 1400 drop frames out of 10,000. Much improved.

Mint thinks I'm using a laptop though. I have a Brightness Icon next to the sound and i temporarily installed a gt 1030 and found Mint wanted me to use Nvidia Prime (Optimus) which it put in the panel as well.

Everything is running the way i wanted so I'm going leave it the way it is right now. Thanks for all the help. :)

SMG wrote: Sun Jun 20, 2021 9:17 pmOne needs at least the 5.7.1 kernel in order to get Renoir graphics drivers. Anything prior to that kernel will be booting in software rendering mode for graphics and there will be an N/A for the graphics device driver.
Side remark: I checked back on what exactly the Renoir laptop does, and you're right. While the graphics do display with 5.4, it's only software rendering mode. Good enough to install a newer kernel via the Update Manager, but not good enough for regular use.

I'm on kernel 5.11-0.22

I changed the HDMI cable to a better one and managed to get true 4k at 60 hz with 1400 dropped frames out of 9,000. So the cable switch did help a little.

Looks like AMD has neglected the Linux drivers for 5700G as it doesn't work smoothly even with a current kernel 5.13.6, months after its introduction: https://ounapuu.ee/posts/2021/08/07/amd ... pressions/
