HP ProBook 455 G7 (Ryzen 4700U) blackscreens on kernel 5.4, wifi trouble on kernel 5.8

Post by TRW »

Hello everyone,

after running Mint on my old T410 for a while, having dual boot with Mint on one of my computers und generally being really comfortable with Mint I finally decided to switch my work/uni notebook to Mint (Cinnamon 20.1 x86_64). Most things seem to work but I noticed that a message about missing video drivers popped up and I got a black screen after suspending the system (which i do a lot by closing the notebook and taking it somewhere else).
Some research led me to other people having this problem and solving it, more or less, by switching to the 5.8 kernel.
That worked, no more blackscreens, but: Now my Wifi keeps disconnecting. I've read that could occur (even the message when installing kernels warns you about that) and tried multiple versions of the 5.8 and even a 5.11 kernel. They all have the same problem.

sudo journalctl -fu NetworkManager tells me connection disconnected (reason -4), I have not really made anything out of that information yet other than someone on an ubuntu forum saying it could be bluetooth interference.

I have updated my BIOS since I read that could help and there was an update available. I have turned off secure boot.

inxi -Fxxxrz outputs the following:

Re: HP ProBook 455 G7 (Ryzen 4700U) blackscreens on kernel 5.4, wifi trouble on kernel 5.8

Post by SMG »

Welcome to the forum, TRW.

Your computer has Renoir graphics which means it needs to be using at least the 5.8 kernel in order to get those graphics. The 5.4 kernel does not have the drivers for Renoir graphics which is why you were getting the message about missing video drivers. Missing drivers will cause a problem with suspend and resumption from suspend.

I presume you have Legacy boot disabled in BIOS as mentioned in the other thread.
TRW wrote: Wed Jun 23, 2021 2:48 pm...tried multiple versions of the 5.8 and even a 5.11 kernel.
Were these the versions available in Update Manager?

Have you tried the tips here Easy Linux Tips: Bad Wireless connection?

Your computer uses the iwlwifi driver and I know there have been changes over time both in it and the intel microcode (which can affect it). It's possible when you upgraded to the 5.8 kernel you also ran an intel microcode update which may have affected your computer's WiFi, so this issue may or may not relate to the kernel version.

Please open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T), click CODE:SELECT ALL, then copy-and-paste the following as one block of text into the Terminal window (Ctrl-Shift-V)...

Code: Select all

W=wireless-info;I=/usr/local/bin;U=sudo;${U} wget -q -nv -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/$W/raw/master/$W -P $I/;\
cd ~/Downloads;V=$W.txt;$U chmod +x $I/$W;$W>/dev/null;(inxi -Fxxxrz;modinfo `inxi -n|grep -Po 'ver: \K[^ ]+'`|grep parm)>>$V;\
(lspci -nnkD;lsusb -tv;rfkill list;(lsmod;dmesg)|egrep -i "wl|firm|fail|blu|bt|rt";${U} os-prober;cat /proc/cmdline)>>$V;\
(iwconfig;lshw -c network;dkms status;mokutil --sb-state)>>$V 2>&1;tr -cd '\11\12\15\40-\176'<$V|nc termbin.com 9999;rm -f $W*.*
After a pause, a termbin.com URL will appear in the Terminal window. Paste that URL into a reply. This will give us detailed info about your wifi.

The results will help us to help you.

Thank you both for your quick answers!
Sadly, I am not as quick right now. I'll try the suggestions/run the command as soon as I get to it.
To answer the questions:
I presume you have Legacy boot disabled in BIOS as mentioned in the other thread.
Yes, legacy boot is disabled.
Were these the versions available in Update Manager?
Yes, tried the 2 or 3 newest 5.8 versions, then skipped a few and tried some older 5.8 versions. For 5.11 there wasn't much of a choice with only one version available.
Have you tried the tips here Easy Linux Tips: Bad Wireless connection?
Nope, I'll do that!
It's possible when you upgraded to the 5.8 kernel you also ran an intel microcode update which may have affected your computer's WiFi, so this issue may or may not relate to the kernel version.
I see... Haven't noticed any connectivity issues after switching back to the 5.4 kernel though.

If you are using the 5.4 kernel, you are probably seeing the message about no hardware acceleration because the graphics drivers are not loading.

Well, I just got ready to spend the rest of my sunday troubleshooting this with your advice but it turns out the very first thing in your (SMG) very first suggestion
Have you tried the tips here Easy Linux Tips: Bad Wireless connection?
did the trick! Checking if the power management was on with iwconfig and turning it off with sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf plus a reboot was all I had to do. Haven't missed a single ping in the last 700.
I feel like I could've found that out myself instead of wasting ya'lls time on here

Anyways thank the both of you for your time and effort!

Good evening everyone!

Sadly I was wrong. Disabling power saving made it better but the wifi is still acting up. Tried all other steps on that site (the ones that applied) as well, nothing helped, sooo... here's the termbin link: https://termbin.com/5gw2

Hope that helps in finding out what the problem is and how to solve it!

Can you give us more specifics about what "acting up" means?

Have you tried to the 5.11 kernel yet to see if that helps?

Of course! I was rather annoyed when I typed out the last answer which was why i kept it short, sorry about that.

By acting up I mean it sometimes flat out just disconnects from the network and reconnects after 10-30 seconds (estimate) mostly. Other times it apparently still has a connection to the wireless network, just not to the internet (nothing loads, microsoft teams and everything else that's open complains about missing internet connectivity). I haven't gotten to test much (ping, dns, etc.) in this state. Earlier I was just watching some netflix and it decided to go out (while still showing an active connection), which made me switch access points (from where I was both were in reach), turn wifi off and back on, etc., but in the end the only thing that helped was a reboot, which is not a huge problem when only watching netflix but a hassle when I'm working.
In general I tested using the other access point in case for whatever reason one of my access points just doesn't like linux mint but it doesn't seem to make a difference which one I connect to.
Also haven't gotten to testing the 5.11 kernel with power saving disabled/all the other steps described on the website that was linked. Without power saving disabled 5.11 and 5.8 seemingly had the same problem.

Should my next step be trying 5.11 again?

I'm not sure if it will affect this situation, but he 5.8 kernel stops receiving updates some time next month, so you'll be moving to the 5.11 anyhow. Maybe we'll get lucky and it will help.

What you describe sounds like it could be a powersave related functionality. I am not very well versed in connection issues, but I noticed the below in the data you posted:

Code: Select all

[iwlmvm]
filename: /lib/modules/5.8.0-59-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/mvm/iwlmvm.ko
license: GPL
description: The new Intel(R) wireless AGN driver for Linux
depends: iwlwifi,mac80211,cfg80211
retpoline: Y
intree: Y
name: iwlmvm
vermagic: 5.8.0-59-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
parm: init_dbg:set to true to debug an ASSERT in INIT fw (default: false (bool)
parm: power_scheme:power management scheme: 1-active, 2-balanced, 3-low power, default: 2 (int)
If I am understanding it properly, it indicates the power scheme is set to "balanced". I do not know what it is balancing with, but maybe that is a factor.

Maybe Larry78723 will know whether that is a factor.

Good to know, maybe I'll just change to 5.11 as soon as I got time for it then anyways. No point in waiting, is there?

Hm I'd understand that part solely as "the default is balanced", but I could be wrong.
Checking iwconfig shows Power Management:off though.

Thank you again for your help :)

You can see the kernel support dates in Update Manager. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Click on the version in the left pane to see the available releases on the right. The "supported until" date is listed. By clicking on the specific version in the right pane, additional options are available.

I could be wrong as well. We'll wait for those who have more network troubleshooting skills to set us straight. :)

Until then I just switched to 5.11 and I will be testing. Really annoying this is not easily reproduceable for testing. Eh. We'll see how it goes. :)

This might be causing it to keep trying to switch between them. This would result in disconnects. This is a WAG. Sorry I can't provide more definitive reason for the problem.

Re: HP ProBook 455 G7 (Ryzen 4700U) blackscreens on kernel 5.4, wifi trouble on kernel 5.8

Damn, okay. I'll delete one of them, maybe that'll solve the issue for my main workspace as it doesn't try to switch around. Might also relocate the router and see if that helps.

This is probably going to be a dumb question, but what does WAG mean? Might not be familiar with the term because english is not my first language.

Thank you for your help!
