This problem has now followed me across 2 laptops (Both Lenovo Carbon X1) and Linux Mint 18 to the latest 20.2 all with Cinnamon desktop for over 4 years. For some time I suspected it might be due to the sleep mode, but recently it started again during actual use. I have googled a lot and tried a bunch of suggestions and also read about the Bay Trail Series CPU issue but havent tried it yet as it will kill my already crappy battery. So I am hoping maybe someone here can help me identify the problem.
There is nothing in system logs and I have to force the laptop off by long holding the power button.

What happens when it freezes? I am having a similar problem. When my PC freezes, I am able to move the mouse cursor but not click anything. If I press crtl - alt - backspace, it will allow me to sign into a new session.

With a 10th-gen Intel, we suggest you use the 5.11 kernel which is available in Update Manager. Freeze problems with these newer cpu's tend to clear with a newer kernel.
Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Or your computer was very, very new when you first installed Mint and it has taken a while for the open-source community to develop the best fit kernel for your hardware.

Yeah i get that, it was the latest model your point does make sense, do you know if this is tracked anywhere? CPU to kernel version stability...wishful thinking? .
BTW since downgrading to 5.11 its been super stable thanks everyone

I do not know of a specific list. There are places which list what new features come out with each new kernel. I base my recommendations on what I know about the new features with each kernel and the feedback I get from users here on the forum when they try different versions.
