Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2 [SOLVED]
Hi Everyone,
I've got a new laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad E15 20RD with Intel i7 10th gen), Dell docking station (WD19TB) and two Dell 2k monitors. I can see the two monitors in the display settings (the laptop screen is turned off). One is set to be active; however, when I press to activate the second monitor and hit apply, it gives me the error:
GDBus.Error:gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code2:could not set the configuration for CRTC 64
How can I fix it and make the second monitor work (as it works in Windows without any problems).

This older thread Could not set the configuration for crtc 64 (15.04) has a similar error and lists what the person checked during troubleshooting. Maybe it will help you.
If not, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
I suggest you update to the 5.11 kernel which is available in Update Manager. Your cpu is new enough it really should not be using the older 5.4 kernel. A newer kernel also provided newer graphic drivers and that may resolve the issue you are experiencing.
Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
I would guess the screen in the inxi data is your laptop screen since you have indicated you do see Mint on it.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
It appears I misunderstood when I commented about the laptop screen showing in inxi output. Re-reading your initial post, you have three total screens and not two. One is the laptop, and two are external monitor connections. The laptop and the two DP connected monitors all are listed as connected in xrandr, but only the DP1-1 monitor is showing the current resolution. DP1-1 is the screen which shows up in inxi output.

The laptop screen shows a preferred, but no actual.
The second monitor also shows a preferred, but no actual.
However, I did notice the following two errors.
I searched on the first line and found this bug report from three years ago Multimonitor does not work correctly with Modesetting driver on Intel hardware with xorg-server 1.19.99.902. Xorg-server is now newer, but others mentioned the issue still happening on newer versions. Maybe the workaround one user mentioned in that thread, " If I disable IOMMU access to the GPU using "intel_iommu=on,igfx_off" in the kernel arguments, it works correctly." might help?
For the second line, I found this thread with a similar message [solved] Periodic system slowdown with Xorg spike in CPU and that person felt it was related to using i3bar. Maybe there is something running on your system that is causing the message. It may not be related to the graphics issue as Xorg handles all human interface devices (screens, mice, keyboards, etc.).

Do you know which file I need to modify to disable IOMMU access to the GPU?
How to figure it our what is running on my system? Btw, it's a freshly installed system and I have only one app installed on it.
Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
You would modify grub to add these two kernel parametersKATAMAPAH wrote: ⤴Thu Aug 26, 2021 7:18 pmDo you know which file I need to modify to disable IOMMU access to the GPU?I searched on the first line and found this bug report from three years ago Multimonitor does not work correctly with Modesetting driver on Intel hardware with xorg-server 1.19.99.902. intel_iommu=on
and igfx_off
. This thread How to add a kernel parameter explains how to temporarily or permanently add kernel parameters. In the System Monitor app there is a Processes tab. If you only have one app on your system (I see the git ppa on your list) then that may not be a factor in this situation.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
Then I recommend removing the kernel parameters. No sense having them if they do not resolve the issue.
How do you have the monitors connected to the docking station? I ran some searches on the docking station and found others having issues. I suggest you check this: How to Use and Troubleshoot Dell Thunderbolt Docking Station WD19TB/WD19TBS. I did find some notes in the "Setting up an External Monitor" section which reference Linux-based distros. There are also sections for troubleshooting with multiple monitors.
I do not know if your Lenovo meets the requirements listed for the Dock because that webpage only lists Dell computers.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
So I checked the link you shared. I have the latest firmware on my docking station as well as the latest bios on my lenovo. Troubleshooting there comes to the point to check cable pins bla-bla. It all works fine in Windows on my Lenovo (I have dual boot). What I may try is to run Ubuntu live to see if it works there. Will update you when I test it.SMG wrote: ⤴Sat Aug 28, 2021 11:21 amThen I recommend removing the kernel parameters. No sense having them if they do not resolve the issue.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
Small misalignments of cable pins could cause issues. The graphics drivers for Windows are different from the ones from the Linux kernel and connections can be "sloppier" in Windows and still work while that is not always the case for Linux-based distros.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
ok, so I ran Ubuntu live (latest version) and while booting, I noticed the three screens working (laptop and two monitors). But they were in mirror mode by default (which apparently I didn't need). So I switched to join mode and got the same problem: there was no way I could manage to work either two monitors or two monitors and laptop screen in join mode. I started switching the monitors resolutions and refresh rates. Refresh rates didn't matter at all. But the resolutions mattered. The moment I switched from 2k (2560x1440) to FullHD (1920x1080) it started working as expected right away. 2048x1080 worked as well but not 1920x1200. So I switched back to LM and did the same procedure and it worked as well. I now have two monitors working while the laptop screen is off. One minor problem with the wireless keyboard and mouse connected through usb dongles to the docking station. The moment I rebooted from Ubuntu to LM, they both worked fine. I did another reboot and they both stopped working. I had to shutdown the machine for them to start working again. Seems to be a kernel issues both with the 2k (I assumed same issue is real for 4k monitors) and wireless devices connected through a docking station.
Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
I do not know enough about how that code works to be able to give an explanation of what might be happening unless for some reason the monitor was not being recognized properly. Glad to hear you have found a solution.KATAMAPAH wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 31, 2021 10:25 pmok, so I ran Ubuntu live (latest version) and while booting, I noticed the three screens working (laptop and two monitors). If you consider your original issue resolved, please Please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know there is a solution in this thread.
The only way to prove it is a kernel issue is to use a different kernel and have it work. It does not sound like you have done that, so I would not label it as a kernel issue.KATAMAPAH wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 31, 2021 10:25 pmOne minor problem with the wireless keyboard and mouse connected through usb dongles to the docking station. I have heard of others running into issues with usb devices and them losing power, especially with regards to usb 3.0 ports. I suggest you create a new thread for that issue. In troubleshooting it, I would suggest checking dmesg (which I presume you can do with the laptop's keyboard) for clues about what might be happening.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
I had a chance to go through more of the How to Use and Troubleshoot Dell Thunderbolt Docking Station WD19TB/WD19TBS and found the following under Frequently Asked Questions.
I do not know the specifics of how that port is powered from your laptop, but maybe the "negotiation" between the laptop (which was rebooted) and the dock is causing this to happen. Why do the peripheral devices which are connected to the docking station become unresponsive after recovering from a power loss?
Our Dell dock is designed to operate on AC power only, and it does not support laptop power source back (powered by laptop Type-C port). A power loss event makes all devices on the dock fail to work. Even when you restore the AC power, the dock may still not function properly because the dock still needs to negotiate proper power contract with the laptop's Type-C port and establish a laptop EC-to-dock-EC connection.

Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
Now this explains the behaviour of the DS. I now understand why it works like this, though I don't understand why it has never happened to me running Windows 10 on a Dell Precision laptop. Thank you for all the info you have provided.SMG wrote: ⤴Wed Sep 01, 2021 5:03 pmI had a chance to go through more of the How to Use and Troubleshoot Dell Thunderbolt Docking Station WD19TB/WD19TBS and found the following under Frequently Asked Questions.I do not know the specifics of how that port is powered from your laptop, but maybe the "negotiation" between the laptop (which was rebooted) and the dock is causing this to happen. Why do the peripheral devices which are connected to the docking station become unresponsive after recovering from a power loss?

I will mark this as Solved.
I have the only question left. When I reboot and choose the latest kernel, it boots up with the latest kernel. However, after another reboot, it reverts back to sort of a default kernel which is 5.4.0-73-generic for me. Do you know how to permanently change my kernel to the newest version?
Re: Second Monitor doesn't work Mint 20.2
The system should automatically boot to the highest number installed kernel. If it is not doing that and you have more than one Linux-based distro on your computer, then it is possible one of the other distros is in control of grub and not Mint. You would have toKATAMAPAH wrote: ⤴Thu Sep 02, 2021 9:31 pm When I reboot and choose the latest kernel, it boots up with the latest kernel. sudo update-grub
on the other distro in order for Mint's grub to be updated so your system automatically boots to the highest kernel. If you do not have other Linux-based distros installed, then create a new thread in the Installation & Boot section of the forum with this issue. I'm not sure what other types of situations might cause that to happen.
