Mint on Ryzen 5

Post by Nadeem »

Hello

I intend to buy a china-made computer with Ryzen 5 2500U processor and Vega 8 GPU. Motherboard is Chinese made, OEM. I want to know whether I will be able to run Linux correctly on it. The seller says he has drivers only for Windows. Your advice, experience will be appreciated.

I'm currently running Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon on a Ryzen 7 3700 with an nVidia GTX 1070 GPU and I have no issues with anything. I'm not sure about the Vega 8 GPU but, after running Linux distros for 20 years on various computers, I've not seen any problems with video drivers. Hope that helps a bit.

How about the sound and network drivers? Any issue given the motherboard is OEM from china and not branded?

You won't know the answer to any of your questions until you try to boot the machine.

Does Mint have a repository of standard drivers that can work with any hardware? e.g. legacy sound and network adapters?

No, it isn't needed. The Linux Kernel proveise almost all drivers except for nVidia video cards and some wifi network adapters.
