FileSystem becomes readonly with nvidia-340 drivers

Post by vlOd »

So I recently upgraded to Linux Mint 20.1 (Cinnamon) to Linux Mint 20.2 (Cinnamon).

I had the nvidia-340 drivers installed before upgrading but after after upgrading, randomly the filesystem would become readonly.
If i uninstall the nvidia-340 drivers and use the nouveau drivers everything is fine and I can do whatever I would try to.
Does anyone know how to fix this????

You are attempting to run a leading edge operating system on slow, old equipment so it should come as no surprise that there are issues. The issue may not actually be due to the nVidia drivers specifically, but to an interaction of different drivers. It could also be an interaction due to hardware failure that has only now made its presence known. It's difficult to say, and probably doubly-difficult to troubleshoot. I would recommend trying LM Xfce, using the open source driver only, or a different distribution, eg MX Linux, that is geared toward old hardware.

The reason for that advice is that while Linux has advanced at least 11 years ahead of your machine, the machine itself has not moved since the day it was built. Also, just because it worked ok with 20.1, given the age of the machine, it does not follow that it will also work with 20.2.

None of that implies that 20.2 cannot be made to work with nVidia drivers, only that it probably isn't economical to troubleshoot. Also, you make no mention of how the drivers are being installed, so information is missing. Finally, if the machine's performance is acceptable with the nouveau driver then the best course of action is probably to stay with it.

I was installing them from the driver manager, but I didnt try reinstalling them after the upgrade, so after I purged them and then reinstalled them they are pretty stable now.

Ah, ok. I'll keep that piece of information for future reference. Thank you.
