Suspend/Sleep Problem In Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC Nvidia 470

Post by GaryD »

Update:

I've finally traced down the problem to Motherboard Issue.

After trial and error thing, I found that the NVME installed on the main NVME slot of my motherboard is causing the issue. Without it installed, the sleep/resume works just fine.

So, it's not LM issue after all. However, there are workaround in Windows 10.

NOTE:
1. The problem is triggered when using F12 BIOS and up. I've actually did several tests and tried all the BIOS version up to F14c
2. Similar issue were also reported on Gigabyte B550 subreddit.

The second issue that I'm trying to solve now is the software-based sleep/suspend on LM2.02 / GT710. My issue now exactly the same with what you had referenced before - "Impossible to resume from suspend with Nvidia GT 710"
> Read the temporary workaround below.

--------
I've been having a number of problems relating to sleep lately.

I can't suspend the B550-based system at all, with nvidia-driver-470.

To explain further, the problem goes a little something like this:

1. Clicks on Suspend Button
2. System Seems to go to sleep, then resume itselfs after motherboard LEDs turns off.
3. Screen stays off/black after no.2
4. Waking up the system via configured "spacebar" wakeup/resume key does not work.

Do you actually have 2 of these cards in your machine?
Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 710] driver: nvidia v: 470.57.02 bus ID: 04:00.0 chip ID: 10de:128b
Device-2: NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 710] driver: nvidia v: 470.57.02 bus ID: 08:00.0 chip ID: 10de:128b

Yes I do have both.

Primary Card - Main Monitor
Secondary Card - No Monitor, but with so-called virtual-monitor - disabled for the time being.

I would recommend using a newer kernel than the 5.4 LTS kernel because there were improvements for 3rd-gen Ryzens which were added to kernels after the 5.4. The 5.11 kernel is available in Update Manager. Let us know if you want to try it and need instructions.

It is also a bit odd your system is showing as booting UEFI, but your Mint installation is not on a drive with GPT. MBR is usually what one uses for Legacy boot.

Other people have found they can suspend the computer, but they are having issues with the display resuming from suspend.

How do you have your monitor attached (ports on the GPU)? If I recall correctly, I think people were having less issues with HDMI ports.

There are some ideas you might want to consider in this thread Impossible to resume from suspend with Nvidia GT 710.

I did a check now, and it's available. Will try this out
Other people have found they can suspend the computer, but they are having issues with the display resuming from suspend.
If you watch the shared video, you should see that once I clicked on the suspend button, the system seemed to go to sleep, but turns on again after a sec. No suspend at all, however it was working fine for the last couple weeks. I am really not sure what I did wrong, but I don't install/upgrade too much. PLUS, I used TIMESHIFT a lot. Tried the previous auto backup, and all were the same, all having prob with suspend.

Like I mentioned above, before your reply/post:

- Main Card, Primary Monitory, HDMI Slot 0 of the main card, main pcie slot
- 2nd Card, 2nd pcie slot, HDMI Slot 0 - virtual monitor, disabled via LM display settings.

Additonal info:
- The system is being used as dual boot system between unRaid and native boot.
- AFAIK, the system was first installed via GPT scheme. Not sure If I did a fix/modification via software or TimeShift.

Hope the above info helps.

I saw the screen go black and the red light in the computer come on. I thought you hit the keyboard in an attempt to wake it up, but it did not wake up. (I do not have that hardware, so it's definitely possible I could be misunderstanding what I am seeing in the video.)

If it is not going fully into suspend mode (which we could probably check with dmesg or journalclt) then that is a likely a different root issue than the one in the thread to which I linked. Sometimes those types of issues can be related to ACPI issues which are handled by the firmware (UEFI).

We will probably have to check logs to determine what is happening.

Are you pressing the power button to reboot after the system gets stuck? If so, after rebooting run the following in a terminal:
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which ended in a black screen) in reverse order (so hopefully the problem is near the top) and sends it to termbin. It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

It sounds like there might be a physical hardware issue which might be a factor in this situation.

I did a quick search on "power button does not shut off gigabyte computer" and found this PC no display, won't turn off with power button which is a slightly different situation, but it did turn out to be hardware (mobo) related.

This thread came up with other ideas.

It looks like you put the computer to sleep just as it was finishing all the start-up messages, but I pulled those start-up messages out and these were the ending messages (newest is at the top).

There are different sleep levels on a computer. Each level has different items it will power down. It is possible the command is putting some items to sleep and not others. Nvidia is definitely going to sleep.

You might want to check what options are in your BIOS/UEFI related to sleep, especially regarding the power button. Maybe some rails on your system are powering down while others are not.

Other than system updates (which you can check in Update Manager --View > History of updates), wer there any changes to your system you can remember doing?

Edited to remove link to termbin at user request.

I will go through the links/post/guide you posted above this weekend.

Meanwhile, I see that the major changes I did to my system was upgrading from 20.1 > 20.2

I am not aware of anything in the Mint upgrade which causes issues related to suspending the computer, but it's possible something else was updated at the same time. That seems to be when a lot of people also updated their Nvidia driver.

Re: Suspend/Sleep Problem In Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC Nvidia 470

Post by GaryD »

Hi, I did some tests, and here's what I got.

I came across two different behavior:
1. NVIDIA driver set to 460 / LM 20.2 / Kernel 5.11: Clicking suspend button goes to Lock Screen only. No suspend at all.
2. NVIDIA driver set to 470 / LM 20.2 / Kernel 5.11: Clicking suspend button goes to sleep, sort of - then turns back on again with a Black Screen. See video

How to troubleshoot further?

What commands, and where to look for logs? Thanks!

Hardware Checks:
1. Power Buttons and Board PINOUT - No issue
2. Motherboard - No issue, as everything has been working fine since I build this machine.

I believe it's software base, just don't know where to look in.

Check this "Impossible to resume from suspend with Nvidia GT 710" thread starting with this post for some ideas of things to try.

@SMD

I have different scenario here. The one you linked to was able to suspend, but not able to resume properly. In addition, I've never changed my graphic card. It has been GT710 ever since I've build this machine. Also, suspend/resume has been working great, not until recently. Tried to revert back to previous TimeShift snapshot but still the same - no suspend. Even though those snapshots are known to be working, before. I label snapshot with "checkpoint" to remind me that that snapshot is a known good snapshot.

In my previous case, no suspend at all.

Other Cases I've Gone Through:
See video

In my new case:
- Reverted to LM 20.1
- NVIDIA 460
- Kernel 5.4.0-84-generic

When I click on suspend:
- Machine seem to suspend now, but turns back on again. Very different behaviour in my last scenario.
- After turning back on after a second or less that a sec, no more black screen, and I'm able to log back in - no prob. See video

However, you have not used the exact same Nvidia driver the entire time. That is why I referenced the link; I thought, perhaps, some of the issue might be related to the driver both of you are using. (There is actually more to the driver version than just the first three numbers.)

That would seem to indicate the hardware might be the problem. If the current operating system configuration was the problem, then rolling back to a known good snapshot should fix it.

There was an error message which came up right after the suspend came back. All I could see was "hardware hex: return -5" and "error -5".

Because the system is coming back, if you run dmesg -T | tail -n 200 after you log back in, you will see the last 200 lines from the journal. I would think that message would be in the list and maybe some others which might indicate what is happening.

Yeah, saw that too. I was actually able to do a dmesg and journalctl but I forgot to save them somewhere safe. I've put the logs in /tmp. I will get back to you on this -- thank you for the continued help.

UPDATE:

Im back with the following info.

dmesg - I saw the following, in red font (I think these are what you saw in the video):

Code: Select all

[  109.024751] PM: dpm_run_callback(): usb_dev_resume+0x0/0x20 returns -5
[ 109.024755] PM: Device 1-6.2 failed to resume async: error -5
...and another line in red:

Code: Select all

[ 13.252920] snd_hda_intel 0000:08:00.4: No response from codec, resetting bus: last cmd=0x02335180
The above was taken from LM 20.1, Kernel 5.4, Nvidia 460

inxi -Gx:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 710] driver: nvidia v: 460.91.03 bus ID: 06:00.0
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: nvidia unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa
           resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GT 710/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 460.91.03 direct render: Yes
Update:

Still no good. I've tried switching drivers.

Also, what error should I look for when doing dmesg or journalctl command? I am totally clueless what the logs are telling me, I don't know how to interpret them.

@SMD

While waiting for someone to jump in and help out, I did a painful trial and error.

Found something interesting, and might be the culprit.

Here's my trial and error result.

Test A (with NVME Installed, no other drives attached):
1. Booted from LM 20.2 Live USB
2. Once it reached the desktop, I suspend the system
3. Result: same with previous test. System seems to power down, then back on again

Test B (without NVME Installed, no other drives attached):
1. Booted from LM 20.2 Live USB
2. Once it reached the desktop, I suspend the system
3. Result: System goes to sleep successfully, then hit on keyboard key to wake up the system, and resume went well.

I've tried re-installing several times, while preserving my home directory (encrypted), but same result - sleep won't work.

Could it be the NVME slot or CPU or Mobo?

Anyone? Any Ideas? I don't know how to interpret logs.

There should be multiple lines in dmesg related to the system going into sleep mode as the command to suspend is passed to all the components in the system. Then the components will wake and you will see messages about that.

Normally, when there are problems, the difference between the timestamps will let you know the system either did not go to sleep, or it did and then immediately woke up.

That is a very interesting observation.

I'm going to say yes, it could because I seem to recall reading about there being differences depending upon which slot was used for the NVME and what other drives might be attached. Something to do with how power is handled as it passes through the motherboard to the individual slots? I do not recall for sure the specifics and I think different motherboards handle it differently. You might want to check for specific information about your hardware.

@SMD

I've updated the post, inserted on top of this topic.

It turned out to be a BIOS issue. Newer BiOS version are all the same and causing the issue - the NVME on the main slot thing. So this is now resolved, BUT in another issue.

The second issue that I'm trying to solve now is the software-based sleep/suspend on LM2.02 / GT710. My issue now exactly the same with what you had referenced before - "Impossible to resume from suspend with Nvidia GT 710"

So, now I've narrowed down the problem, and it's within LInuxmint 20.2 and prolly NVIDIA drivers.

I did another tests, and this time followed the "Impossible to resume from suspend with Nvidia GT 710" thread, and found something that helped with my issue.

To Continue:

My system can now be suspended with the F12 BIOS Version. However, resume is partially working, why partially? Because...

1. Clicking on Suspend button works, but blackscreen upon resume
2. Same thing with command "systemctl suspend"
3. But, I have success using command "sudo pm-suspend" - with this command, I was able to suspend/resume my system with no problem, no black screen.

This is progress.

I will still need to make that SUSPEND button work.

You've made a lot of progress today!

I have not yet done much research into the differences between the different commands and which one is "attached" to the suspend button, so I can not, unfortunately, offer any advice. Others have let me know they found certain commands worked while others did not, so your feedback is consistent with that.

@SMD,

On another issue, can you point me to topics re: no lockscreen upon resume/suspend?

AFAIK, lockscreen has been working fine when I was testing the "pm-suspend" command. I see lockscreen after resume.

UPDATE:

While looking for a workaround to remedy the "no lockscreen" issue with the "pm-suspend" command, I found via autocomplete, the command "suspend-then-hibernate".

To cut the long story short, I did try that command with sudo:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl suspend-then-hibernate
...and the result was awesome!

System went to sleep (before it did, it locked the screen first - saw it), then I wake the system up with space bar and then boom! No blackscreen, system fully resumed.

Compared to the "systemctl suspend" command, gives me a black screen and power or reset button don't work with that state.

However, I'm seeing some error log on screen and in my dmesg below:

Code: Select all

[  100.906096] PM: dpm_run_callback(): usb_dev_resume+0x0/0x20 returns -5
[ 100.906107] PM: Device 1-8 failed to resume async: error -5

[ 931.094448] PM: Device 1-8 failed to resume async: error -5
