Intermittent Black Screen

Post by scholl36 »

Hello,

I am new to linux mint and linux overall. Below is my hardware information. I am having chronic issues where my monitor will go black for about a second or two and then come back on after "intensive" graphics processes. Games on steam are unplayable. I can launch the game, but the second the game starts, i hear the grachics card fans speed up and the black screen will occur for a second or two. Function will resume for a second and the black screen will occur again, until i quit the game. If I go to what seems like graphical intensive websites, like Apple.com or youtube, it will occasionally occur.

I have tried everything i could possibly find on forums. Nothing has helped. I have tried installing drivers, changing power settings, etc. Nothing is working. Any recommendations would be great. Using a 4k Lg 32" monitor. FYI when the screen goes black, i also lose sound for the duration of the outage. But the display doesnt lose power.

Please let us know how you are attaching the monitor (HDMI, DP, VGA, etc) and the make and model.

Please also give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

It is possible this issue is a combination of several factors.

Looking through your data, your system has an 8th-gen Intel processor. Based on feedback from users on this forum, it seems that gen and newer tend to run better with a newer kernel. The 5.11 kernel is available in Update Manager.

To install it, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Another factor is the AMD driver you have installed. I see you have installed the AMD driver from the AMD website. When you do that, it also installs the appropriate mesa package. Which mesa version is in the AMD driver package? (I do not have this package right now to check, but the 21.20 AMD package has the Mesa 21.1.0 version.)

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590]

5.4.0-84-generic LLVM 12.0.1)
v: 4.6 Mesa 21.2.0-devel direct render: Yes

In the repo list, I see the kisak-mesa-ppa and I'm wondering if you also have it installed. Maybe there is interference happening?

Thank you again for your response. Your help is appreciated.

I installed the latest kernel. In order to "trip" the black screen on demand, i run a game. Once i get into the actual gameplay, the black screen tripping again repeatedly until i quit the game.

I installed the AMD drivers but when that didn't work i posted a question on a you tube comment section of a trusted channel and the kisak mesa ppa drivers were recommended, so yes i did installed them too. Are you recommending keeping the AMD drivers and deleting kisak mesa ppa? if so, could you walk me through that process?

Thank you again,
Andrew

So this is not a general issue, but one which happens only when running certain programs?

Kisak ppa has a very good reputation. However, usually when they are installed, the info in the renderer section of inxi says kisak. Since it does not, you may not be using those files. Did you install kisak before you installed the drivers from the AMD website?

It may be that whatever is the last program to install mesa drivers takes priority so there is no overlap. I do not know that for sure, but I thought the kisak ppa was already at a higher version than 21.2, so between that and the lack of the kisak name in inxi, I think you are using the AMD mesa.

At this point, I suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot and then uninstalling the kisak ppa (per their directions for removal) and then reinstalling the ppa and see if the output of inxi -Gx shows a change in the renderer.

I also think you may want to research what options there are related to graphics for the specific games that are having problems. There may be some tweaks which can help.
