Touchpad with finger-print scanner not working on dual-boot (SOLVED)

Post by George »

Hi, long time fan, first time posting..

I got a new laptop (Gateway GWTN156-9) and I installed Linux Mint 19.3 Mate dual-boot with Windows 10. Sense the live usb the wifi and touchpad won´t work (maybe they haven´t created the drivers yet). The touchpad have a fingerprint scanner on it. Everything works great on Windows, I solved the wifi problem but can´t get the touchpad to work. I´m not interested in the fingerprint scanner, and not a fan of Mint 20. I have try the Synaptics drivers and for some reason it wont used them, I remove the default ones and keyboard and usb mouse stop working and I had to reinstall everything.

So if someone can help it will be very appreciated!

Welcome to the forum, George.

Unfortunately for you, Mint 20 is what you would need to use to get a graphics driver loaded for your system. Right now you are running in software rendering mode. Not only would the newer kernel available in LM20 give you graphics, but it would probably give your system the necessary drivers for the other issues you are experiencing.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel driver: N/A bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9a49
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa
compositor: compiz v: 0.9.13.1 resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0 256 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 20.0.8
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

With an 11th-gen Intel processor, your system needs to be using the 5.11 kernel which is available in Update Manager for Linux Mint 20. It is not available for LM19.3.

Yeap, I did install Mint 20.2 and upgrade the kernel to 5.11 but it was a little slow on shutdown so I install kernel 5.8 and its perfect now. Thanks anyway for confirming that info and taking time to answer me.

The 5.8 kernel stopped receiving support in August. We do not recommend using a kernel that is not receiving support.

Yes I may have to upgrade to 5.11 but for now 5.8 is really fast vs 5.11 and it haven´t had problem so far.
