Display Link issue when laptop lid is closed ( CPU goes to 100%)

Post by The Doorway to »

Greetings
I'm on Mint 20.2 Kernel 5.11.0.36

I installed the Display link drivers and my docking station ( Plugable UD-3900Z) works great with laptop lid open if i close lid Video shudders and CPU at 100% any fixes folks know about?

I read this is issue on github but there doesn't seem to be a fix for Mint yet?

Thank you
Clint

Welcome to the forum, The Doorway to.

What version of the DisplayLink drivers did you install? Was it the 5.4.1 (released Sept 6, 2021) version?

Do you have a link for the GitHub issue you saw?

Also, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Edited to add: Is this the GitHub issue you referenced Lags when Notebook-display off #290 ?

That is the latest version which just came out a few weeks ago.

The reason I asked for the specific version and your inxi output is because others found success using older DisplayLink versions with a patch from the DisplayLink forum. However, that older version will not work with the 5.11 kernel which is what your system should have and their issue was getting the external monitor to work (your monitor is working).

That is using displaylink 5.2.14, so I am not sure that is the same issue.

The link I found likely references the DisplayLink 5.4 version (based on the date of the issue). The issue discussed there may not be addressed until X.Org 1.20.12? Currently your system is just one version back at X.Org 1.20.11.

DisplayLink is a third-party driver and not maintained by Mint.

Do you have a way to connect the monitor directly to the computer to verify the issue only happens when using the DisplayLink driver?

The information I found for the dock Plugable Dual HDMI USB Universal Docking Station For Windows does specifically mention "Linux not supported." which I think is the first time I've seen that in a listing. It's obviously mostly working for you.

I do not know if any newer Xorg files that may come out in the future may help, and I do not know enough about how the DisplayLink driver works to recommend a workaround.

There is a DisplayLink forum if you want to ask there to see if others may have a solution.

Default Linux Mint 20.2 uma - Lag when Laptop Lid Closed
I recently upgraded my Lenovo T430 to Mint 20.2, which is based on Ubuntu 20.04. At the same time I decided I wanted to use a DisplayLink I had laying around with two external monitors. I installed the DisplayLink driver (displaylink-driver-5.4.0-55.153) and everything was working fine, until I closed my laptop.

If my laptop is open, and the laptop screen active, there is no lag at all using the external monitors. Everything is great.

If my laptop is closed, the lag to the external monitors is so much that they are unusable.

Initially I thought the issue was my wireless mouse and keyboard, it took me a while to determine that it was the DisplayLink itself (or at least the combo of DisplayLink and my version of Mint). Trying with lid open was not something I did intentionally

At any rate, I'm happy enough with the workaround of keeping the lid open. Thought I would post in case it's useful for others as I didn't see this workaround when searching.

TL;DR, if my laptop is open and the laptop screen active, there is no lag at all using the external monitors while running Linux Mint 20.2.

Default workaround
This is fixed up stream on xserver-xorg-core now, the distros just have to merge the change.

there is a workaround right now by adding

LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=true

to your /etc/environment file

I would think the option of keeping the laptop's lid open is not the one you are asking how to accomplish. ;)

And you already know connecting the monitor directly to the laptop will not trigger the issue.

DRI3 is involved in rendering the graphics you see. I think you may end up seeing errors and/or graphics performance issues if you disable it. That person did not indicate what desktop or graphics driver they were using when applying the workaround. (Actually, they did not even mention the operating system they are using.)

The bug fix for that specific issue is being worked on, as I mentioned in my prior post. One version of Ubuntu (Impish) has already received it. I do not know the specific timing for Focal (the version used in Mint 20).

The Cinnamon desktop is one which specifically checks for hardware rendering because it is a more graphically intensive a desktop than MATE or Xfce, so I suspect that fix could cause problems. If even you did it, you would have keep watch on when the fix is released and undo that change. When the updated file is released, it would not automatically remove your "workaround".

Just wanted to let you know that I received X.org 1.20.13 so perhaps the driver will now work properly with the lid closed as that is a newer version than the 1.20.12 which supposedly has the fix in it.
