ASUS TUF FX705GM.307: Fan Control?

Post by pendrifter »

I've had the above laptop for a few years, which for the most part works swimmingly with Mint. However, relatively recently (like in the "months" range), it's finally come to my full attention that my system isn't controlling the (two) cooling fan appropriately. I can throw all 12 cores up against the wall with prime95, and I'll barely get a whisper out of them. They used to wind up much more, although I can't remember how long ago I heard them spool up noticeably.

So, I need assistance in getting them under control again, or at the very least making the default cooling policy more aggressive. I've been scouring the internet for a couple of days with no joy. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

I have 'psensor' installed, but I only activate it once in a while.
My 'office' is a recliner, and I usually have a blanket across my legs, and the ceiling fan is just above me blowing Hot Air from the Ceiling down to the floor to equalize the temps around the room.

So, the vents on the bottom of the Laptop get covered up in the blanket and the laptop starts to feel really warm against my legs. So, I used PSENSOR to see how hot it was getting, and got quite the Fright!!!
after that, I made sure to park a book on my right leg to allow the vents to stay open and the Fan Exhaust to be open.

here is a brief pix of 'psensor' for only about 5 minutes.

I had it open a couple weeks ago to install the 4tb Samsung drive. I cleared what little dust there was on the fan fins with alcohol-wetted cotton swabs. If the machine were having airflow issues, I would expect the fans to be working harder, if anything. As it stands, they're idling under any load.

What are CPU temperatures and frequencies when you run prime95 with 12 threads? I suggest you run a stress test. Look at the third post in viewtopic.php?p=2070571#p2070571. Use stress -c 12 -t 600. Check also uefi options. Maybe there are settings for fan management. Have you changed anything there in recent times?

Hello pendrifter,

I'm a beginner with LM and not a computer expert, but I'll add a few simple thoughts just in case they might help.

It seems you are saying that your fans are no longer cooling normally or sufficiently even when your computer is running at full tilt. Although it sounds like you have observed a lack of appropriate fan response while your CPU cores are running at very high or maximum speed and really heated up, I think the experts reading the thread could better help you if you post actual data showing this.

In your code post, if I am understanding it correctly, it doesn't look like there was much going on with the fans at the moment you captured the data:
  • "Fan Speeds (RPM): cpu: 0"
  • "Power Supply Fan . . . Nominal Speed: Unknown Or Non-rotating"
And if I am interpreting correctly, it looks like your CPU cores were sort of taking a nap too.

If you run a stress test or otherwise push your CPU cores to the max (and tell us if they are actually running at their full speed or not) and then also record and post both your CPU core temperatures and your fan speeds, then I think we will all have a much clearer picture of what is or is not happening.

You probably already know all this, but here are two easy ways to get the core temperatures and fan speeds:

1) Install the "Sensors Monitor" applet or
2) In the Terminal, type the following:

Code: Select all

Sensors
I am curious, can you actually hear the fans making a "whisper" or might they not be turning at all?

I don't know much, but here are some things that come to mind that could potentially explain poorly working fans:
  • If any internal wiring changes were made, e.g., when you put in the new drive, make sure no fan that should be connected to a 4-pin connection accidentally got plugged into a 3-pin connector - because that would prevent it from fully communicating with your system.
  • Make sure that, when you added your drive, you didn't accidentally allow a wire or some other (hard to see) object to block or partially block a fan from turning.
  • You could have a loose connection, damaged wire or a dead fan. If only one fan is set to communicate with the system (and set criteria for both fans) and that fan is out of commission, then it might explain both fans not working.
  • I believe you should have a Nvidia applet icon in your panel. When I right-click on mine, it gives me options for "Nvidia Performance mode", "Intel Power Saving mode" and "Nvidia On-Demand". You may want to check those settings, because if you are set in power saving mode, maybe that is preventing your cores from running at high speeds and negating the need for the fans to do any major cooling.
  • If you made any UEFI/BIOS updates, you may want to check if the new version is set to keep your CPU throttled down to substantially lower than max specification speeds (e.g., no turbo-boost) all the time. It appears that my UEFI/BIOS came that way by default -- probably because Dell only gave me an extremely wimpy cheap CPU cooler.
Well, I hope one of my amateurish thoughts about fans might be helpful.

Good luck!

for myself, I am not able to hear the fans at all. ( but I am deef to the point of being deaf ) - 30dB in left ear, zilch in right ear.

I can just barely feel any exhaust air coming out the vents.

I know they work because some toilet paper will blow out away from the vents.

Actually, it's beginning to look like at least one of them has failed...perhaps not coincidentally the one that was making a distressing sound a few months ago =D Good thing I have a backup set. I'm still interested in pursuing this topic, though. I'll revisit when the new fans are swapped in.
