No HDMI audio w Mint 20.2

Post by lighthouse7 »

No audio through HDMI cable to SONY amplifier.
MrEen, I see that you are the sound card wizard. You are my only hope.
I have a dual boot with W10 and Mint 20.2. HDMI audio worked with W10. Sound stopped after Mint install. After installing Mint, I have not used W10 except to turn off Fast Startup.
I reinstalled Pulse audio per step 6 in your No sound tips (did not purge). HDMI is still “available: unknown”.
Thanks for helping so many people. I am happy to get in line and wait.

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
only shows pulseaudio files

Upgrade to 5.11 kernel.

You have usb external DAC for your audio. Does the onboard sound card work without the BurrBrown Dac installed?

I did not consider that because I do not have any USB out device connected. However, I had a USB turntable connected. I disconnected it, restarted and now USB output is not listed. Still no HDMI sound.

I have both Sound (sound@cinnamon.org) and PulseAudio functioning at the same time. Should I?

That is all usb sound, has nothing to do with your hdmi sound. Does your onboard sound card work?
Even if we get your hdmi sound selected in pulseaudio, there is no guarantee that there will be sound if the drivers are not working. You having all the usb sound made me wonder if you were having trouble with your onboard sound to begin with?

Here you have hdmi sound selected correctly in pulse audio, but no sound.

They do sell a HDMI Audio Extractor & Embedder at Amazon. So in worse case scenario, you can embed usb sound into your hdmi stream. Maybe MrEen has an idea what could be the problem?

Sorry lighthouse7, I just saw this thread. My time is quite limited now, so I only thoroughly check the Sound sub-section listed above, and just very quickly scan everywhere else.

Radeon HDMI audio has been a tricky situation for Ubuntu. They keep fixing/breaking/fixing it for more than a year now. I'm somewhat hoping that is the issue in your case. This is almost always a kernel issue, so try a few of the lower 5.11 kernels or a few of the lower 5.4 kernels than what you were using and see if the sound springs to life.

In the meantime, let's get a look at your sound setup with this command:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line of output will have a URL pointing to the info. Pasting that URL is all I need.

I tried 4 versions of 5.11, 5v of 5.4 and a 5.8. Restarted each time with 20.2 Advanced. No sound. It still works on W10.

I was wrong about the Radeon HDMI Audio for you. You're using you built-in sound card's hdmi output and not the video "card"s output.

I really can't spot anything wrong in there, unless it really should be using the Radeon output, which I somewhat doubt. Just to be safe, see if enabling the Profile on the Configuration tab of PulseAudio Volume Control for the Radeon card shows anything as NOT unavailable. If they all say unavailable, that's probably a dead end.

If that is indeed a dead end, install alsa-tools-gui so you can run HDAJackRetask, and when it open ensure ALC1200 is selected in the upper left. Check the box for Show unconnected pins. Now in the left pane see what 0x11 is described as. Then go through each Not connected pin one at a time checking their Override box and seeing if you can change it to the same as 0x11 shows. If one can be set as such, set it, and change 0x11 to Not connected. Click on Install boot override then reboot and see if the sound works. If not, clicking on Remove boot override will undo the change. After another reboot you can see if another pin can be tried.

PulseAudio only shows Dig Sterio HDMI. Nothing else available. The additional steps beyond that, may be above my skill level.
But I found a work around. This cheep computer does have an optical cable output. I can get a digital output to my amp and then 5.1 sound. Next computer will have a more cooperative sound board.
Thank you for the thought you have given to this puzzle. So much for me to learn.
Should I mark this as "Solved"?

I certainly wouldn't say solved. Probably best to just leave it as it.

I'm glad you found something that works for you.

To be clear though, the Digital Stereo HDMI was for your built-in card, correct? Did you look at the options for the Radeon card, and did they all say unavailable? There should be two different sections on that Configuration tab.

Thank you all for considering this problem.
I'm not worrying about it now that I have a work around.
I will be reading more on how sound cards work.
Fare thee well.
