Mouse doesn't reach left edge of screen (Solved)

Post by gemk65 »

Hi,

I have Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon.

My mouse pointer does not visually reach the left edge of the screen. Logically the pointer functionality does reach the left edge, in the sense that it can select and copy text that extends to the left edge, but the pointer cannot be viewed performing this action; the displayed pointer stops about two millimeters "inland" from the border.

My mouse pointer reaches the upper, lower, and right edges of the screen without any problem.

My computer technician did some testing and found no problem with the screen (brand new), computer (3 years old), nor the mouse. (My mouse is indeed old, but the problem occurred even with the technician's new mouse). So we think that the problem is with the software of the operating system (or possibly a driver or firmware).

Can someone try to help me solve this problem?

What theme and mouse pointer are you using?

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Thank you, SMG.

I should mention that the problem persists even if I change the screen resolution.

I am using the Theme:

Window borders: Mint-Y
Icons: Mint-Y-Aqua
Controls: Mint-Y-Aqua
Mouse Pointer: DMZ-White
Desktop: Mint-Y-Dark

Results of command inxi -Fxxxrz:

Re: Mouse doesn't reach left edge of screen

Post by SMG »

The launch date for the Intel Celeron J3160 processor was in 2016. Perhaps it could make use of the newer i915 graphics driver available in the 5.11 kernel. If you would like to try it to see if it might help this situation, you can upgrade to the 5.11 kernel using Update Manager.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:
 • Open Update Manager.
 • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
 • Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
 • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Re: Mouse doesn't reach left edge of screen

I installed the kernel 5.11 and rebooted, but there is no change in the behavior of the mouse pointer.

This problem began after I updated my Mint 19.3 system. I was hoping that Mint 20.2 would solve the problem.

Thank you just the same. If you think of any other possible solutions, please let me know.

So the problem was not there for Mint 19.3, but after you did a fresh install of LM20.2 it was there?

Nothing came to mind in the data you posted. Maybe someone else will have ideas.

The problem was not there for most of 19.3, but it appeared after a recent update to 19.3. When I installed 20.2, the problem was still present.

I don't really know what to make of it, but something seems to be aging or mismatched. The problem could be a driver, it could be the computer, or it could be something else. I will have to be patient.

Today the problem fixed itself, just as mysteriously as when it first manifested.

The mouse pointer flickered a bit (disappeared and re-appeared), and then I noticed that it now reached the left edge of the screen, as is normal.

I notice that the mouse does a lot of flickering over certain areas of the screen, such as buttons. I am not sure whether this is normal, or what the issue is, but it is not really a problem, though it might be related to the problem that I had.

There are effects in the Cinnamon desktop and it is possible some activate when you mouse over buttons. I have a laptop with not a lot of memory, so I have all the effects turned off and do not really know what they do.

If you want to see if turning them off makes a difference, open the Effects app. Moving a slider to the left will turn off the effect. You can see if that makes a difference to what you notice.

A Cinnamon update to 5.0.6 just came through within the past few days. Maybe one of the updates was a factor in the original issue you noticed.

Thank you, SMG.

I always have all of the Effects disabled.

But I will be sure to keep updating my system on a regular basis.

This post is Solved (for now).

The problem returned after a reboot. I will leave this post unSolved for now.
I notice also, after the reboot, that the flickering of the mouse pointer has stopped.
There seems to be some unstable process going on.

What settings are being used in your Displays app? Are you using the native resolution of the monitor? I noticed there is no resolution listed in your inxi output. Usually, the resolution is listed.

My monitor recommends 1920x1080 (a 16:9 ratio) at 60 Hz, but my vision is not so great, so I need to choose the next level down, which is 1600x900 (also a 16:9 ratio) at 60 Hz.
The mouse pointer displays the problematical behavior no matter what the resolution is.

By the way, my command inxi -Fxz does return the resolution:

Code: Select all

 Device-1: Intel Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx
 Integrated Graphics

The only other idea I have is to check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to see if there are any errors or warnings related to the mouse. Maybe there might be a clue as to what is happening in that file.

Thanks. The text in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log is so lengthy that the Forum does not permit me to copy and paste it all. I don't see any mouse warnings, but here is a sample:

I also do not see anything which might indicate an issue.

We'll have to see if anyone else has "mouse" ideas.

Re: Mouse doesn't reach left edge of screen

Post by gemk65 »

Just now I did an experiment: I created and used a live-boot USB containing Linux Mint Mate, and another one containing Linux EndeavourOS.

The LInux Mint Mate session presented the mouse pointer with the same problematical behavior -- it could not reach the left edge of the screen.

However, when I booted the Linux EndeavourOS from the live USB, the mouse pointer behaved perfectly normally, reaching the left edge of the screen and fully able to select text positioned at the far left of the screen.

This experiment appears to demonstrate that the fault lies not with my mouse, screen, or computer, but with something in the Linux Mint software.

You indicated in your initial post that you were able to select items on the far left and that the problem was just visual.
gemk65 wrote: Wed Oct 13, 2021 9:23 amMy mouse pointer does not visually reach the left edge of the screen. Logically the pointer functionality does reach the left edge, in the sense that it can select and copy text that extends to the left edge, but the pointer cannot be viewed performing this action; the displayed pointer stops about two millimeters "inland" from the border.
Are you now saying the problem is no longer visual and you can no longer select items on the far left?

There are a significant number of software differences between EndeavourOS and Mint. If you really wanted to say Mint is the problem then a better comparison would have been to test an Ubuntu distro and not an Arch-based distro.
