So, it looks like you needed the wl along with the 5.4 kernel. Good going.

On and acer laptop the wifi key is the the F2 key to switch on/off, check that.

Yes. Thanks everyone for all your help. I don't really know why it will not work right in XFCE but it does on Cinnamon. I went with that. I may try MATE if it's too heavy for the laptop. Again thanks so much!

I had a HP laptop with a Broadcom driver. Twice the kernel update failed to support it. I had to use the old kernel until the new one was released. Also one way to check is to install Synaptic on Peppermint and see what Broadcom software is installed in that system that works (on a USB drive), then use Synaptic to install that software on Mint.
