sound & keyboard issues

Post by Bubbette »

Hello,

I've only recently installed Mint 20.2 - just about 2 months ago. It's a dual boot system w/Windows. I am regularly having issues with both my keyboard and sound. Not sure whether the issues are hardware related, or software related, so will start here.

The keyboard will suddenly stop responding & the workaround I've found is to boot the virtual keyboard & type a key, then close the virtual keyboard & everything's fine again until the next time it happens.

The sound is a little more complex. I almost always have issues when in web meetings - both Zoom and WebEx. In Zoom I can usually manipulate the sound settings until I get it working, but WebEx doesn't have sound settings that I've found. Also, for example today, my Brave browser won't play any sounds, but Firefox will. If I reboot, it fixes the problem - until the next time.
Edit: Oh yeah, when the sound disappears, the sound-related F keys (including microphone) are non-responsive also.

I'm also having occasional issues with everything freezing up & a couple of times I've had to do a hard shutdown. Don't know if all these things are related or not. Is there a hot key combo I can use like Ctrl/Alt/Del in Windows when everything freezes?

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

I suggest you upgrade to the 5.11 kernel and see if that clears the issues you've been experiencing. 10th-gen Intel is quite new and the newer kernel should be a better match for your hardware.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Thank you @SMG. Update is done. Let me give it a day or two and see what happens. I'll post back with problems or clear, either way.

So far so good - no sound or keyboard issues since upgrading the kernel.

However, there is a related issue I don't think I described clearly - the freeze problem, which did occur yesterday. What happens is the mouse (a Logitech M575 trackball) will scroll around the screen but doesn't recognize links and won't click on anything at all. When this happens the keyboard is also non-responsive and the only way I know to get out of it is a hard shutdown. :(

That is good news.

Is the keyboard the one attached to the laptop or a separate keyboard?

Do you have more than one port into which you can attach the Logitech receiver? Sometimes, power draw issues can affect ports and cause weird things to happen.

The only other idea I have is to check the journal of the "freeze" boot. After you press the power button to shut down and restart, you would run the following in a terminal to get the information:
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button) in reverse order (so the reason for the freeze should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.

I do have one other USB port for the mouse, which I have switched to. We'll see if that helps. Meanwhile I've copied the Terminal command and if I have to do another hard shutdown, I'll run it and post back here.

Thank you.

UPDATE:

I have plugged the mouse in to the other USB port since previous post. I have not had any incidents with the mouse since doing this, but then the mouse really hasn't been the issue, and I'm moving it back to its original location.

I have so far not had another incident of having to do a hard shutdown since updating the kernel, but I'm still having occasional keyboard freezes necessitating activating the virtual keyboard, and a little search taught me Ctrl/Alt/Del works for Linux too so hopefully if that DOES happen again, I'll have a new option to hard shutdown.

The sound volume F keys still "stick" (not the key, just the action) when raising/lowering volume, unless I touch the keys with a whisper for a millisecond.

Sound issues continue - namely not all apps are using the same hardware options and it's inconvenient to talk in mtgs & not be heard /or not be able to hear others without fiddling with settings - where would I set the default for this, beyond System Settings? And why don't apps like Zoom remember the settings from last time?

The 5.13 kernel became available in Update Manager if you want to try it. Use the same directions as for the 5.11 kernel except you will want to make sure 5.13 is selected in the left panel.

That sounds like a key sensitivity issue. I'm sorry, but I do not know what regulates that. Maybe someone else will know.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'not all apps using the same hardware options'. Are you talking about apps in browsers? If so, that might be related to the app itself or browser settings. I do not use Zoom, but I believe there is a Zoom forum if you have specific questions about it.

If it were just Zoom, I would find their forum, but b/c there are other issues, I believe it's a Linux issue. The bit with the F keys "sticking" is specific to Mint, as I'd been running Windows on this laptop for over a year before switching to Mint, and never had any issues with sound or the keyboard. I guess I'll cool my heels for a while and leave this on the back burner until I get too frustrated to ignore the issues - the biggest one being those "sticky" F keys (only the ones for sound BTW). Maybe there's an alternate way to adjust volume that's not too cumbersome that I haven't run across yet...

Considering WebEx does not even have a help section for those with Linux-based distros, it is possible this is an issue related to the apps you are using. This webpage Webex Community members bring Linux support for Webex to life is a year old. Yet the Webex | Your User Interface still has no information for those using Linux-based distros.

The Linux Mint 20.2 Release Notes indicate:
Sound and microphone issues

If you're facing issues with your microphone or your sound output, please install "pavucontrol".

This will add "PulseAudio Volume Control" to your menu. This application has more configuration options than the default volume control.
Maybe that will help?

Yes, I think this will be helpful, thank you.

When the keyboard stops responding, I'm trying to pin down what exactly I was doing just prior and I usually can't remember because I'm not focused in that way. However, yesterday I remembered I'd been in Firefox. Brave is my primary browser, but I use Firefox for certain websites, so they're both always running & I pop back & forth between them often. Perhaps there's something like an IRQ conflict going on?

Modern-day browsers are extremely resource intensive. It's possible it was just a resource issue as the cpu/memory was handling all the requests. How long do you wait to see if it responds?

I see in your first post you mention booting the virtual keyboard. Are you doing that with a touchscreen since the keyboard is not working? If you can get to a terminal, I suggest running dmesg -T | tail -n 200 to see if there are any indications of what the problem might be.

Not very long - maybe 10-15 seconds at most. It happens so often, I usually just confirm that I've really lost control, then I go right into the virtual keyboard.

I go thru the menu, using the mouse - which doesn't often give me trouble. And it just happened again yesterday. I was doing a mundane, repetitive task in Firefox. Out of nowhere, the keyboard stopped responding. When this happens & I boot the "VK", I've learned that I don't even have to type anything to get control back - I only have to boot it. Isn't that strange?

dmesg -T | tail -n 200 it is, the next time it happens! I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: sound & keyboard issues

Well, that didn't take long!

Taking a screenclip (rectangular section) which failed w/msg like "all methods failed" and the keyboard froze up & the mouse partially froze - meaning I could min/max windows but not actually interact w/them otherwise. The touchscreen completely failed to respond (1st time I've tried to use it during a freeze). I could bring up the shutdown menu but not actually reboot or shut down. Ctrl/Alt/Del also brought up the shutdown menu but wouldn't respond. I think I finally got a response using arrow keys & the enter key - on the frozen keyboard! How is that even possible?

I ran the two Terminal commands (dmesg & journalctl) and have the results, which are too large to be accepted as attachments. Here's the dmesg cmd results, which include nothing with today's date - all entries are from Sun 11/14. Sorry it's so long. I'm unfamiliar w/reading Linux logs but see entries of concern and suspect "PROTO" may possibly be the ProtonMail Bridge app that allows Thunderbird to retrieve my ProtonMail.

I'll post the results from the journalctl cmd - which is even longer w/all entries being from Sat 11/13 - on request.
EDIT: journalctl results can be found at https://termbin.com/zbi4

If I am recalling correctly, I think if one periodically puts the computer to sleep repeatedly then the timestamp can be different from the actual time. I do not know if that is what happened here because you had indicated earlier in the topic that you had to restart the computer using the power button. The time should reset itself in that case.

The dmesg output shows a "sleep cycle". However, it appears the computer automatically woke up right away (2 seconds later). Are you able to successfully suspend your computer?

Code: Select all

[Sun Nov 14 21:24:51 2021] PM: suspend entry (deep)
...
[Sun Nov 14 21:24:53 2021] PM: suspend exit
The line right after that is enabling a human interface device (hid).

Code: Select all

[Sun Nov 14 21:24:53 2021] ish-hid {33AECD58-B679-4E54-9BD9-A04D34F0C226}: [hid-ish]: enum_devices_done OK, num_hid_devices=2
If this is what happened when the keyboard "froze", then it seems like the computer went to sleep.

What steps/keystrokes did you do to take the screenshot?

I did not notice anything which seemed like a problem in the journalctl output. It appears to have been a normal shutdown/reboot after you unmounted what appears to be a Windows-SSD. Based on its timestamps, it seems your current boot cycle has been up and running for several days.

I happened to see this topic today [SOLVED] Zoom microphone is not working Mint 20.1. I do not know if that seems like your issue or if it will work, but figured I would pass it along.

When you say "suspend" I'm thinking "sleep" if we were talking Windows, and yes, it goes to sleep when I close the lid. However, there have been a couple of times when I opened the lid and it was already awake - only a couple of times.

What that probably was, was one of two things: either it started to go to sleep & I woke it right up, or I closed the lid and then bumped the mouse.

I have a shortcut in the panel, so I click the shortcut, click >select an area to grab, then click >take screenshot.

1. Glad you didn't see anything of concern in the journalctl. Out of curiosity, what would the PROTO be in the dmesg log?
2. Yes, I do occasionally mount the Windows partition to transfer files to/from its desktop, as I still use Windows for particular tasks maybe 1-2x/week.
3. While in a perfect world I wouldn't reboot the system hardly ever (tho I remember in the old days before laptops when I had to shut down every night!), I do find it necessary to reboot rather often - either to get into Windows or due to updates or because I've had an issue. On average I would say I probably reboot every 3 days?

Thank you. I took a look at that thread but it doesn't really sound like the issue I'm having, which may have been resolved w/install of the PulseAudio Volume Control - I haven't had an opportunity to test & can't find how to test the mike in the app even tho it's easy to test the speakers. Go figure.
