Bluetooth headset mic not working (Sony XM4 and Mint 20.2)

I cannot get the microphone to work on my bluetooth headset. I struggled for a while even to find a bluetooth adaptor that worked, the fourth one I tried worked. I can finally get sound output through the headphones but the mic input doesn't work.

This thread suggested that the profile needed to be HSP/HFP, but when I try setting that as the Output profile I lose audio and don't gain the mic so end up with nothing at all.

I've tried various attempts over the past few days to get this working (which I need for work, doing a dial for meetings in is a pain in the ass) but I'm hitting a wall. Any help would be much appreciated!

Can't help you with your problem.
My BT headset looses audio from the laptop every time a YouTube video ends,
I have to turn it off, back ON and then it is fine.

I think mine is using ADHP
