New Laptop Touchpad and Multi Finger Issues [SOLVED]

Post by aybesea »

I've recently purchased a new Dell Inspiron 5500 laptop and installed LM 20.2 64 bit Cinnamon on it. Initially, I tried the standard edition, but when I experienced wifi and video issues, I reinstalled with Edge. Now all of my hardware (except the fingerprint reader) is supported and functional, but I'm having an issue with the touchpad.

While the touchpad basically functions correctly, from time to time (very intermittent with long times in between occurrences), especially after using two fingers on the touchpad for right click or scroll, the touchpad gets crazy and refuses to move smoothly. In some ways, it almost looks like it is in scrolling or right click mode and I can sometimes correct it by double tapping. But not always. Sometimes it eventually just stops moving the cursor entirely. I reboot and things are good again (until they aren't). I tried reducing sensitivity in the preferences, but that makes it worse.

I read another post where someone said that I should just post my specs here and you guys will help me get this sorted out. I hope this is the case!

Your help would be absolutely wonderful! I'm super happy with this laptop, and as a 10 year LM user, I'm thrilled to have Mint onboard. Now I just need to tame this touchpad. And future support of the fingerprint reader would be great too.

I saw your post in another thread. I have the exact same laptop and installed Edge for the beginning and have not had a single issue with my machine. Are you dual booting with Windows? Just trying to figure out what's different between you amit_27 viewtopic.php?f=49&t=360130&p=2087346#p2087346 and me.

No, Windows is not in the picture... just Mint. I think the biggest difference may be that my machine is Ryzen based?

That might have something to do with it. Did you update the BIOS after you got the machine? I think that was the first thing I did after installing Mint. When I logged on the Dell website it said there was a critical BIOS update available. There were even instructions on how to download and install the update for Linux. A good sign for Dell.

Would disabling the TouchPad be an option?
I hate the darn things,

I always use a LogiTec M510 USB mouse.

Thanks Bob. It took me a few minutes to figure out to find my service tag, check for a BIOS update, and figure out how to flash it. But, flash it I did!

Hopefully this may sort things out.

Thanks for the thought, but I seriously cruise on a good touchpad.

Well, since the BIOS update I've yet to have another issue. I'll give it the weekend and if it hasn't occurred again then I'll mark this solved.
