Touchpad and keyboard on Dell I15 5510 Inspiron not working properly

Post by amit_27 »

Hi,

I just got a new lapotp yesterday Dell Inspiron 15 5510. I have installed Linux Mint Cinnamon edition on the laptop.
Here is the command I ran to get hardware info:

I have two specific issues:

1. I can't scroll down using the touch pad. I have tried both edge scrolling and 2 finger scrolling and neither method works.
2. When I am typing on the laptop using the laptop keyboard, the cursor positioning gets moved randomly, like to the first word or the 4th word randomly.

I have checked the driver manager, but it says I don't need any additional drivers.

Here is the information from hwinfo --less comand:

Try switching OFF the touchpad and using a mouse. If this fixes the random pointer movement during typing then that movement is due to your thumb(s) getting too close to the touchpad while typing.

It is possible to switch OFF the touchpad during typing but I'd suggest the touchpad OFF totally to start with to test whether it is a thumb problem.

I am posting about a very similar issue on almost the exact same laptop here viewtopic.php?f=49&t=360120

I have found that my laptop runs much better on Edge than on the standard kernel and scolling works fine (except when it doesn't... see my thread).

I have that exact laptop. I installed Edge from the beginning and have not had a single issue. Well, one issue but that might have been related to a drunk use of sudo  .

Did you make any changes in bios before you installed? I did not.

fyi, I did a fresh install, wiping out the windows installation that came with the machine.

just random thoughts on what you might have done differently since mine is working so well.

Thanks! I installed the Edge version too and know all is well. Much appreciated! :)

Haha. I love this laptop. I actually had nvme 500 gb spare which now has Linux Mint and the other 256gb nvme that came pre-installed has Windows 11.
Edge fixed it for me too, now the cursor is not jumping around and touchpad is working perfectly fine. :)

I really like mine too. Did you have much trouble taking the shell apart to install the drive?

It wasn't too bad the whole thing took me about 15 minutes. I followed this video if you want to give it a try: https://youtu.be/zMVc8iDhzh4
