XPS 9700 temperature increase since last updates

Post by steph68 »

Hello,

I recently updated BIOS and other firmware from Dell website, keep the laptop up to date (kernel, apps like chrome) and since the temperature increase making fan on 99% of the time, while my usage sadly remains the same (even doing nothing, all software stopped).

I looked at :
- CPU : very few % of usage
- RAM : 10%
- SWAP : 0
- HD rw: 6% (continuous)
- GPU: rendering 90% (continuous)

I do not have reference measures, so it's hard for me to draw any conclusion. I'm a bit surprised by GPU and HD usage. So far I don't know how to find the "guilty" process. Maybe someone can help me here...
Anyway, does these measures makes sense ?

Can anyone with and XPS 9700 take some measures without loading programs ?

I use intel_gpu_top for the GPU, iostat for the hard drive, and top for other things.

Have you checked on the Dell community support forum to see if others have run into issues with the newer BIOS?

There is a 5.14-oem kernel available if you want to try it and see if that helps.

Install the latest 5.14-oem kernel with sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d and reboot.

@Steph,

Here's my readout with Chrome browser only. I know this is different cpu (xps 9343) and older OS but if you just want to compare.
