PC freeze, games crashing

Post by icefrog »

Hello,

I have recently built a PC and I want to leave windows and start using linux (so I am a newbie). All PC parts are new without the GPU which is a old one (but still good imho).
I am experiencing once in a while PC freeze (CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work, I have to hard reset), have tried a few games (from steam) and they all crash after a few minutes of playing (I have tried them on windows10 and they work without any problems).
I have tried some tweak found online (like adjust swap, try older/newer drivers for GPU/BIOS etc.), also I tried other distro like Ubuntu but still having the same experience.

Here are PC`s spec:

Hi icefrog and welcome to the forum.

Two things.

Code: Select all

System: Kernel: 5.4.0-90-generic x86_64 bits

CPU: Topology: 8-Core model: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
The first is that with your chip you’re probably going to be better off with the 5.13 kernel, which is available from the Update Manager

Reboot and then, as your running Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GK104 [GeForce GTX 770] vendor: eVga.com. driver: nouveau go to Driver Manager and install whatever it recommends.

HTH.

I have made the changes you suggested. So far didn't had a total freeze, but I am experiencing the same behaviour as before in games. I have tried using the recommended(and other ones) drivers for GPU.
Any other suggestion? :D

Not from me, I'm afraid, but if you post another 'inxi' and say which games are giving you problems then others may be able to help.

If you have installed the proprietary Nvidia driver recommended in Driver Manager, then I second the recommend to give us an updated inxi output. We should make sure it looks like the driver did install correctly.

Nvidia driver information gives the impression all is installed properly.

We would probably need to know more specifics about what games are causing issues and how you installed the games.

There is a section of the forum for Gaming and maybe you might find tips there on existing threads for specific games.

In the post above I have poste System info after the update. I have tried to play Path of exile (on Steam) with Low settings.
Here is a screenshot after the game window went black and crashed (left side was 1st display, right side 2nd display with System monitor and GPU stats.
Sorry about the link, couldn`t make it to show as image

While proton is great and can work well with a lot of games.
I suggest you look at protondb.com and look up games you play on it.

The site will tell you how playable the game is and what settings are ideal based on what the community has found to have worked.
